1.) What is role-playing? 2.) How do I roleplay? 3.) How do I make a good roleplay? 4.) What other tips should I keep in mind? A quick note from one of this thread's developers - This forum is not for your groups. Please go to C&G to discuss your groups.
1.) What is Role-playing? By Soardlo
Roleplaying is the experience of using your own creativity and developing a world, characters, and a story that you yourself play out to your own goals. This helps you develop creative writing skills and better grammar, as well friends throughout the forum. Below I will provide a short description describing role-playing in others own words.
Timpookie: "Roleplaying is a fun way to escape from the day-to-day life of the real world and into a fantasmical world where imagination is the limit."
SIacktivist: "Role-playing is, to me, a lot like writing a book. The difference being that you get to work with other people, see what they do to change your story, paint a big picture, in a way. It's very fun much of the time, and I love being here, and I love you guys. Aaand pause for awws...
Now, that's not to say that we're all perfect. A lot of us are mean, egotistical, rude. But at the end of the day, it's all in good humor. Usually."
Pawzkat: "It's a way to blow off steam at the end of the day, and slip into the skins of characters that aren't yourself. It allows you to test your imagination in different ways, and to utilize it in a constructive, or destructive way."
TaiWolf1234: "roleplaying is fun"
phillipsbackup: "Roleplaying is good when you are the one who gets to experience it, not the one who gives the person that experience, although you can enjoy it more if you use your imagination. Holy crap, that can be taken a few ways."

2.) How do I roleplay? by SIacktivist
If you've had past experience with popular role-playing places such as Kingdom Life 2 or After the Flash, you probably know that the generally accepted way to role-play uses asterisks (*<--- These --->*) to show an action like eating a chicken. To show talking, you type what you say without the asterisks. In the role-playing subforums, however, this is rarely permitted, if ever. Here, we are more descriptive, and as mentioned by myself in the previous chapter, write as if it were a book. In example;
Place role-play: *eats* This is good chicken!
Forum role-play: I bite into the tasty drumstick, and despite the impoliteness of it, comment, "This is very good chicken, ma'am."
As you can see, forum role-play tends to be more descriptive than place. Now, to actually have the opportunity TO role-play, most role-plays require that you fill out a character sheet. This shows who your character is, what they look like, things like that. An example of a standard character sheet would be;
Name: Ian O'Malley
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Appearance: Ian has slicked-back, black hair, and expressive green eyes. He is rather tall, and is of average weight. He can commonly be found in comfortable everyday wear, such as t-shirts, jeans, and converse.
Personality: [Most of the time, this is optional, and can be left to be roleplayed out. However, not always, in which you should at least put down 1-2 sentences, and list the main traits.]
History: [This is (unfortunately) often optional.] Ian is very energetic, often using exclamatory phrases. He is also very friendly, accepting of all people, but a bit hot-headed.
^ That's personality.
Other: [Extra information, often left blank or used for the 'codeword' section.]
[Note: Don't be detered, some Roleplayer's prefer to more 'advanced' CS to the basic one stated above. It's still expected that the information be filled and descriptive, unless stated otherwise by the OP.]

3.) How do I make a good roleplay? By Timpookie
First, you have to have an idea. You can't just make a roleplay because you want to make a roleplay - that most often leads to the creation of some half-baked idea that you can't do well, because you don't feel in-tune with it. You have to make a roleplay because you want to roleplay through a particular storyline and there's no thread already existing for that. Or it could be a free-roam, and you want to create a world.
Regardless of your motivation, there are some things to keep in mind. The first is that you should get some experience forum-roleplaying. Now, assuming that you've already done this and are familiar with the tips in chapter 2, you can move on to the next step.
Step two is to write an outline. I do this by just writing up what I want for the table-of-contents for the main thing of the RP, although ther eare probably other ways of doing this. Just do what seems right for you.
Step three is to begin writing. Remember to follow the tips in part 2 for while you write (write in detail, etc.), and try to keep it interesting without repeating what you've already done.
When you're finished writing, proofread. This can help protect you against plotholes and contradictions. This can also help you to edit things that you're not happy with before it's too late.
Then post it. Remember to give it a snazzy title so that people click on it. Then wait for people to make their CS, and accept or decline accordingly.
If nobody is joining, wait 'till it goes off the first page before bumping. It's considered impolite to bump things that are on page 1.
Without a doubt, you'll get joiners of some sort flocking over to your RP. Remember, though, that RPing is jut for fun, and if you don't succeed the first time that you try to post, make a repost, or go back and edit it some time.
If people are pointing out things to improve (eg. If you have a weak plot, etc.), keep those things in mind and do not retaliate. They are not bullies, they are not trolls - They are simply critics. Now, while I admit they could try to take a more casual tone, they only do what they do to improve your writing. A troll would simply insult you and your writing via harsh language without giving any tips on how to improve it.
Keep what they have to say in mind, and try again!
4] 'What other tips should I keep in Mind?' By Pawzkat
1] First things first, this forum can be harsh. And it's not in that, 'Oh, you can just try again way', several of us are flat-out mean to roleplays[roleplayers] who aren't deemed 'up to standards' by the big guns. When stupid, mean comments are being fired at you, don't blow up in the commentees' faces. This'll just fuel them on for more of those nasty comments, and soon we'll have an all-out flame war on our hands. Either ignore these comments, or take what it dubbed 'wrong', and fix it.2] ISRP. Interactive Single-player Roleplay. In which the OP[see below] sets up the scenario, and the roleplay reacts. For many, the OP usually decides the outcome of that scenario, or provides helpful hints on what to do next.
[Roleplay 'Language']RP -- Roleplay. Should be pretty self-explantory.
OP[1] -- Original Poster, often used in context when someone is referering to the poster of the particular roleplay. OP[2] -- Over-powered, commonly found in 'powers' roleplays. Though seriously guys, it's not the power that's OP, it's how the person who picked that power uses it. Power-play -- Controlling a character in which is not your own. You can not kill, control, or use another user's character without their direct permission. When fighting, instead of saying 'She lept forward and hit Ail, drawing blood', say 'She lept forward, aiming for Ail's arm'. It's up to the owner to decide if it hits. HOWEVER, all attacks can be misses. Meta-gaming -- OoC knowledge that the character somehow knows without chancing upon it. Mary-sue//Gary-stu -- 'Perfect' characters, with no flaws. Characters all have their quirks. CS -- Character Sheet. OoC -- Out Of Character, used for the heading of threads. So if you make a thread called "OoC: Favorite RP genre" or something, it's out-of-character, so jsut talk normally. IC -- In context. Not found often, but common roleplay vocabulary on other sites. Collab -- Either collaborating or collaborative project, depending on whether it's being used as a verb or a noun. PP -- Piratepad. A commonly used collabing site, as it allows for multiple writers to share ideas at the same time. TP - The more 'advanced' version of Piratepad. Some say it's less buggy than the first for mobile devices. TBR//TBRP - To be revealed, commonly used in creating the character sheet//To be roleplayed out. |

I would suggest removing the "Oh, btw, we're all egotistical" notes.
For one thing, that makes you look pretty pompous and self-obsessed. And that's not appealing. At all. Secondly, that will probably discourage people from joining the community. Thirdly, you shouldn't even act like that anyway. It'd be pretty pathetic if this actually got posted because that makes it seem like the "ringleaders" of this forum aren't even that tolerant or open-minded. In fact, it kind of makes you all look like hypocrites. |

I found the ISRP section! It was half a sentence and didn't provide any information at all!
I'm just finding more and more flaws every time I look at this. |

It gets even worse when you start realizing how much they left out.
Not only is it poorly written and the things they did cover as shoddily talked about, but they missed a whole lot. |

I already listed on the locked thread thing that ironically, Tim was crying about. [it was impartial even then]
Also tim, we wouldn't do it based on the futility of it all.
