So I havent seen any CYOA's in a very long time so I thought I'd start one. The genre is historical naval warfare. Except set in a fictional world to "miss" any historical events of the time (the time period being 1620-1720). Let's see...
-
"Creeak..!" goes the wooden floorboards around you, above and below as you stand in Captain's Quarters of your very own ship-- a 40-ton cutter armed with 12 guns, all of 12lb shot. Your crew of 25 and yourself left Jaddek five weeks ago on a campaign to raid merchant ships along a common trade route. The weather is currently great and your crew is in a happy mood. All seems to be going well--
Knock knock knock!
Your quartermaster quickly enters your quarters with a hurried expression on his face.
"Sail, sir! Sail! We see a sail!" he says, running out of the cabin with you in tow.
He gives you a spyglass and points you to the east.
He's right. There seems to be a ship about a few kilometres away. A double-masted merchant vessel. Likely a schooner. It likely has a larger crew but fewer guns.
What are your orders?
[A] Even if we win the cannon fight, our numbers would be too few. Ignore it. [B] Yarr! This is what we're here for! Attack the ship! [C] Let's try a risky trap. We could pretend to be an injured distressed ship then catch em by surprise when we they get close. This would take away our gun advantage though. |

Going with Naruto's line at the moment.
-
"Get every damn piece of canvas we got up in the air!" you shout out to your crew who immediately stop lollygagging and get steering towards the victim ship.
As you get closer you can sense that the enemy has sensed your presence and has slightly altered their course; trying to look like they haven't noticed you. Odd behavior for a merchant ship.
As you close the distance from a few kilometres to nothing but a single, your crew has already gotten the guns loaded and run out with your quartermaster getting ready to fire the cannons.
The distance closes to nothing but a mere 200 metres, the perfect range to--
"FIRE!" you hear from ahead
Ba-bang! Br-Bang! Bang!
A volley of your cannons recoil back on deck, their cannonballs tearing across the enemy schooner as their reply shoots back-- four cannons. They have a total of 8--
"AYE CAP'N!" you look to your left and see one of your crew members has gotten a large fragment of metal lodged into his leg. He needs medical attention immediately and no one is free to help him. Yet you may be needed above deck. What is your decision?
[A] Help this sailor get to your doctor! He needs help now! I trust my quartermaster! [B] This sailor has the guts to last throughout the battle without my help. |

"Richland! Help this lad!" you say as you carry your injured, shouting sailor to the operating table.
"A-ah! Of c-course sir!" your surgeon stumbles up from his chair and grabs the sailor, looking away a few times. Your surgeon is a bit new on the job and still gets a little shakey when he sees the injured. Nonetheless, he has proven himself quite the master surgeon despite this--
B-Bang! BANG!
You hear another volley of cannons and shouting aboard. You rush up the stairs to see your ship has backed up right behind the enemy schooner and has already grappled! Your quartermaster did a fine job! Your ship has managed to get in two volleys, bringing down their numbers to be equal to yours. A fair fight now (even if your enemy is quite a bit lower skilled in combat.)
It's time to engage! What'll you do?
[A] Grab your cutlass and jump into the fray! Face to face is where the captain belongs! [B] Grab a musket and try your shot from afar! Less risk is always the right choice! [C] Man a swivel cannon! Sure the rate of fire will be slow, but there's nothing that'll take down a man like a 1/2 lb cannonball! |

You snag a few muskets off the rack down below and set yourself up on the raise quarterdeck, aiming at the enemy crew and firing--
One!-- Aim... Two!---Aim... Three!-Aim... Four!
You never knew you were such a good shot!--Or were the enemy sailors just that fat? Ah well, either way your marksmanship takes out enemy sailors like some kind of... Musket from afar... (Well I wonder why.) And your crew wins the fray with ease.
After the whole ordeal is over, your quartermaster, Jackson, comes to you.
"Ello sir. We have pillaged the enemy schooner dry. We have brought aboard 600 gold pieces, several swords and muskets, a few tonne of cannon shot and black powder, and ten tonnes of commodity to sell. Two sailors have died unfortunately."
Well you've done yourself quite a good job. I suppose it's about time to introduce you to the stats panel:
- Ship: 40-Tonne Cutter, 12 cannons (6,6 12lb) Crew: 22 (+1 injured) Gold: 1600gp Cmmd: 10 tonnes Morl: Great! -
The above panel will appear above all your stories to track how you're doing! Isn't that just smashing?... No? Well too bad.
However, now you have a decision to make with the enemy ship.
[A] I want that ship! Send over half my men to pilot it alongside me (keep in mind, both ships can sail well with twelve men per, but fighting will be difficult.) [B] Scuttle it! I don't want anyone having that ship! [C] Send over just a handful of men. (This will assure your ship can fight, but if the schooner gets engaged, consider it gone.) |

Ship: 40-Tonne Cutter, 12 cannons (6,6 12lb) Crew: 12 Gold: 1600gp Cmmd: 10 tonnes Morl: Great!
You stand proudly atop your quarterdeck, seeing sailors hop over the railings to the enemy-- I mean... YOUR new ship. You notice the injured sailor you helped earlier going over as well. Before he goes to the other ship, he turns around and faces your, waving with a smile and a grateful nod. Then he turns around and goes over to the new prize ship.
After a few moments the exchange is done and the ships split. The schooner sets up their sails and the two ships sail side-by-side peacefully for quite a number of hours. Your crew seems to have taken a liking to having a prize ship nearby, as the two crews have been having fun throwing small pieces of wood at eachother. Nothing harmful, just great fun.
A few more hours and your crew is happily singing shanties--
"Waaay up he rises! Ehhhh up he rises! Early in the morning!"
Everyone is happily sailing and smiling... Until.
"Hit the deck!"
Woosh! Bang! Boom!
Cannonballs hit your ship, making it vibrate. You snap for your spyglass, looking at the enemy assailant.
It seems to be a... small sloop. 3 guns per side. No more than 20 crew.
What will you do?
[A] Get out of here! Let loose every sail we have! Put up our handkerchiefs if we must! [B] Turn and fight! Two ships could easily take a small sloop like that! [C] (Choose one ship, either your schooner or your cutter flagship) Let one of our ships escape while the other (chosen) ship stands and fights! |

(I always go with the first one unfortunately :P)
Ship: 40-Tonne Cutter, 12 cannons (6,6 12lb) Crew: 11 Gold: 1600gp Cmmd: 10 tonnes Morl: Great!
"Turn'n'present!" you shout to your crew and the schooner's crew.
Sooner rather than later your ships turn around and form a bit of a line-- but not before another enemy volley rips apart your ship.
"Ednies is down!" your quartermaster shouts as he runs towards a man who got a cannonball smack in his gut. He likely wont be living long.
The enemy sloop seems surprised and makes erratic moving-- it likely either missed your second ship or thought you were going to run. Immediately it fires yet another volley.
"Ednies is gone!" your quartermaster shouts as a cannonball hits the railing, shooting debri into the fallen sailor.
Your crew and the schooner crew both come into range of the sloop, firing one cannon after another in a line. You see tons of shots hit a great mark. Many knocking out sailors-- atleast four of the enemy are gone! And many other shots hitting vital areas such as a cannon (so now it's a 5-gun sloop I suppose.)
What'll you do now?
[A] Line up for another volley! [B] Let's engage now! Everyone hop onto the enemy ship! |

Ship: 40-Tonne Cutter, 12 cannons (6,6 12lb) Crew: 8 Gold: 2100gp Cmmd: 10 tonnes Morl: Good!
You order your ships to engage, your schooner crew jumping over first and then your own crew, making a ship-sandwich with sloop as filling-- a deadly sloop!
B-bang! Bang!
The sloop fire all it's cannons in a last-ditch attempt to even the numbers.
The fight however, lasts an excruciatingly SHORT period of time. Actually, the fighting only lasts a mere five minutes-- before you can even really act worth a damn.
With yet another fight over, your quartermaster comes to you.
"Good afternoon sir. We've managed to pillage only 500 gold pieces. No commodities, and only a bit of ammunition and weapons. On top of that, the sloop was quite a fiesty bugger and has taken out a large number of your crew. We now only have 16 men in total of both ours and our schooner ship." he says, limping away with a small piece of shrapnel in his leg.
Quite the bloody fight.
What'll you do, cap'n?
[A] Well... Let's take that sloop. Make it so every ship has five men except ours which will have 6 (this will be fine for sailing. Fighting likely won't end well.) [B] Get rid of the dang thing. It's caused us too much trouble already. (Sink the sloop.) [C] Abandon the schooner and take the sloop! (The sloop will be much faster and more maneuverable and would have been better for battle IF you hadn't damaged one of it's cannons.) |
