I feel like we should talk about actual hip hop around here, kinda like spraying febreeze on a porta potty, it's not long term but it's a breath of fresh air so yeah. This is the top ten hip hop tracks by Yellow Jesus. There's also no real standard for this, it just makes sense to Tha God.
Honorable mentions: Sucker MC's by Run-DMC The World is Yours by Nas 6 N' The Morning by Ice-T Straight Outta Compton by N.W.A Dance with the Devil by Immortal Technique
#10. My Mind's Playing Tricks on Me by Geto Boys (We Can't be Stopped) No lyrical masterpiece but great detail and a beat so good it doesn't even need a chorus.
#9. C.R.E.A.M by The Wu-Tang Clan (36 Chambers) The song that put hip-hop's greatest group on the map albeit maybe Protect Ya Neck.
#8. The Dream Shatterer by big Punisher (Endangered Species) Punisher at his best, and that's saying something.
#7. They Reminisce Ova You (T.R.O.Y) Pete Rock and CL Smooth (Mecca and the Soul brother)
#6. Check Yourself by Ice Cube (The Predator) Befo' you wreck yoself
#5. Ms. Jackson by Outkast (Stankonia) Errybody needs a little Outkast in their day
#4. The Message by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (The Message) Not my personal favorite but it's one of the most influential in hip-hop's history.
#3. Dear Mama By 2Pac (Me Against the World) Rappin' about ya mama without soundin' soft as all hell? That's just a bonus.
#2. Juicy by The Notorious B.I.G (Ready to Die) Like Started from the Bottom if it had actual emotion and detail put into it.
Drum roll....
#1. New York State of Mind by Nas (Illmatic) We've heard hundreds of songs about a rapper's up bringing and his tale of survival, but no one ever detailed it like Nas did his life living in N.Y.

Well, there is not much of a statement that I can make about this list. My preferences seem to differ from yours. You seem to favor the old school sound for the most part.
Meanwhile the only old school artist in my top 5 is Big L. |
