I think they understood me and my reasoning, even though most of them are fans (including me).

Touchdown, Slam Dunk, scholarship, big school, big name brands… Courses, what courses? I’m only there to play ball!
Hi, my name is [MY FULL NAME HERE], and today, I will be discussing my opinion on if universities should large sports teams, mainly for basketball and football.
I do not support universities having large sports teams, because of scholarships, the interference with athlete’s courses, and the big bucks for the university! I will also give you an example of “big bucks” from the University of Maryland, in a few minutes.
First, I’d like to talk about scholarships for the athletes. Most times, basketball and football players are given full scholarships by the universities, which means they get to go to school for free. According to the NCAA, the company that organizes the basketball and football leagues, most athletic scholarships cover tuition, fees, room, board, and textbooks. Many non-athletes have to pay huge money to go university, and they’re great students, but their scholarship is taken by an athlete, who probably isn’t a very good student.
Secondly, I would like to talk about how sports interfere with athlete’s courses. The NCAA requires that all athletes pass all courses they take, to be eligible to play. That means that if an athlete fails a subject, then they can’t play. That also means interference with the athlete’s courses. In many cases, the university administration forces the professor to pass the athlete, because of how important it is that they are in the line-up. Cam Newton, the current quarterback for the Carolina Panthers of the NFL, was expelled from Florida University after being caught cheating on a test. He cheated on the test so that he could pass, ultimately meaning he could play football.
Finally, I would like to talk about the “big bucks” that the university must pay. Basketball and football teams cost a lot of money for the university! An example is the team staff, such as coaches, trainers and other workers. Coaches are very expensive to hire, as well as the coach must serve their entire contract, or else you will need to pay them out all the money you would’ve paid them by the end of their term. Scholarships, like I talked about earlier, are very expensive for the university to hand out. On average, a full-scholarship, for one year, for one player, at a large university in the US, costs $15,000! That’s crazy! That’s for one player. Sadly, when the football and basketball teams aren’t making enough money, other sports suffer. Many universities stop supporting and funding other sports, so that they can pay up for the money that basketball and football have lost. An example of “big bucks” for these universities was in 2011, at the University of Maryland. They fired their coach, and had to pay him out $2 million. Then, they hired a new coach for another $2 million. Their football game’s attendance continued to go down, meaning less money, so to make up for it they stopped funding 8 different varsity, including cross-country, indoor & outdoor track, swimming and diving, tennis, acrobatics and tumbling, and water polo. All of these sports are no longer featured at the University of Maryland, just because the money to fund them was needed for football, even though they had recently blown $4 million, needlessly.
My point is, universities having large basketball and football teams is not a good idea. It is corrupting these great schools. Of course, there is a good side to all of this, like the money made from game attendance, and the way it advertises that university, and gives it a bigger name, but I don’t think that’s any excuse for all the things I talked about like the scholarships, the interference with courses, and the big bucks the universities need to pay! I hope I have informed you on this issue, and possibly changed your opinion on college sports and how they affect the school. Personally, I love watching college football and basketball, but when you look at what’s going on behind the scenes, it’s really not a good thing. Thank you for listening to my speech, and have a great day!

"who probably isn’t a very good student."
"probably"
you have to be sure and back it up with statistics. no "probablys"' you have to say they do and back it up |

| In my opinion there is a lack of information. There isn't enough examples for me to change my mind on college sports and what you said is very basic. |

@deter
My teacher told me to make it more basic, since most people listening to it wouldn't be familiar with the topic at all. Plus, we're limited to 5 minutes, which I barely made.

Maryland cut those seven teams because their revenue did NOT justify the spending that UMD spent on those programs, costing the school more money than it was making
If you're going to try and persuade someone, persuade them with something that's a fact. |

Makes them try more.

Give proof because I haven't seen that before. |

I'll give a quick run down of a counterstatement which you should always think of as you write a persuasive essay:
-Only way out of the slums for kids in poverty who do not have the means to pay for college -Money earned by the university or college can go to construction of new facilities, rennovation of old buildings, more to spend for the supplies their teacher needs -Sports experience brings on sportsmanship at a high level, and demands responsibility to not party (as most other college kids do) in order to perform at their highest level -Sports teams provide a great experience for people who want to go into sports science and have a convenient place in order to practice (NBA teams won't let them for obvious reasons i.e inexperience) -Brings recognition to the universities which means that fans of the team will lean on attending their college (students, not just student-athletes) -Wealthy sports athletes may return to their college to donate money or invest |

So you should never introduce yourself when you are making a speech. Alright. |

They should know who you are if you're doing a speech for them.
