I played a lot of the real Dayz for about 2 years, before that i played Apocalypse rising, Its very similar and there are many things that run along the same lines in AR as they do Dayz. Buildings, items, vehicles, and hackers. Over time I've learn't a lot from many perspectives of AR, banditry, heroism, and survival, while i may not have the badges as back then there were very few and the game was rather imbalanced to win most of them but it was still very fun and a great trainer for Dayz.
Some may disagree with my point of view on the game, but more should agree with my advice as for beginners who i have watched thousands of times walking totally clueless as to the danger they are in. So i figured for the people who like to read about stuff before they play them you might find this thread and have a little help.
I'll start off with some general tips then ill go into role specific tips, such as bandit tips, survival tips( base building), and hero tips
First. The number one rule in this game is awareness, always be finding cover to observe your current situation from. I have gotten more kills on people for simply walking right in front of me clueless of their surroundings, i figure they are going to die in a minute or so anyways so might aswell scrap them for their stuff. Brutal and mean, thats my role in the game, to make it difficult and scary.
Second. This is one thing people is dayz learn to rely on more than most other things, Freelook. This is to walk in a direction with the d pad and rotating the mouse to look around, this should protect you a lot when sneaking bandits approach from behind ( they will follow you for miles) Always scan the horizon for moving bodies, if you see them dont let them out of your sight. always scan your surroundings though, there are other players, Never focus 100% on a player you are in a stand off with, thats when the beginner with the makarov walks over the hill and fills you with holes.
Third. You have to get geared up as soon as you can, anything that may help take it, always decide if something is worth more than another thing you got in your inventory, say dropping a can of tuna for a bloodbag. Also, never be scared to shoot someone in your first few minutes, if you are playing survivor, well play survivor, survivors have to kill to. If it morally bothers you, give them the chance to notice you and then see if they will shoot at you or pull a weapon, if they do you got plenty reason to drop them on the spot. Though unless you are too a beginner then dont kill beginners unless they shoot at you, that's just low sportsmanship, even for bandits, especially for bandits.
Fourth, Put some headphones in and turn them up. You need to hear, it will tell you if someone is walking and jumping nearby, this is a great advantage if you are a bandit and you are on the hunt, its even better if you are a hero and you hear shots, we will go further into that later, The main thing about audio you need to watch for is gunshots as they will lead you to people, or away from people, the best idea when you first begin is to get away or take cover.
Fifth. Leave vehicles alone, they are worthless. This applies to every vehicle in game except MAYBE the bicycle, Now maybe it will get you across the land faster but it will get you dead even faster. They are loud, you can see them for miles, you can disable them very easily. Its really rare to actually use one without getting shot at. Theres one exception for survivors, get to that later.
Sixth. Watch "friendlies" very closely. There are many players who will say they are friendly while they are low on blood, and out of ammo, get bloodbagged and a cz with a few clips, walk up behind up and unload in your face. If someone is with you for longer than a couple minutes request that they join your group, keep the group visible in your GUI if they suddenly drop out of your group for no reason, kill them they are planning to do so to you, if you think you know them well, give them a chance to explain them self but in the end this is a sure sign they are betraying you. Another thing to watch for is people reluctant to join or make a group, they tend to be that way cause they know it makes it harder for them to kill you. Do not afk around new "friends" this is a bad mistake. Watch what they say, undercover bandits(as i call them) tend to be aggressive towards other players always, its best if you are getting a sense they are either trying to alpha you, or are being extraordinarily rude towards you and your friends, pull your gun and tell them to leave if they don't simply shoot them, most battles are won by the attacker who is prepared for the battle as proven throughout history.
Seventh. Silence. Always consider using your pistol or hatchet for zombies, they are usually a lot quieter and more accurate at short range. You always want to move as quietly as possible when you are sneaking on an enemy, avoid glitching as the current state is really bugged but if you absolutely have to, crouch so they cant hear you retreat or flank them. Try to find a door instead of breaking a window to get into a house. if there is a way to avoid zombies while looting, just leave them unless you are gunning for high zombie kills, play a little Tallahassee.
That should help you survive a little longer in general terms. Now lets go into role specific tips, this should help you if you wanna play a certain way but aren't sure just how people are always so good at playing their roles.
Survivors.....
So as for survivors, these are (in my opinion) Base builders. They tend to have some of the most fun in AR, but they also get really mad when they lose their stuff, heres what you need to know to not lose that stuff quite as often.
First off, finding an entrencher is no simple task, you might have to kill a few people to get to the areas you gotta go to get them, but other times ive found entrenchers in seemingly common places, so my advice there is to go to places like Hark, Kin, and some of the military places, fort ruins, radio tower, trinity, prison, and vernal should all provide you the chance at getting one.
Once you get one you want to begin looking for the perfect spot to set up base, My personal choice is commonly either a warehouse in vernal(easy to defend) or the church in mason (plenty of living space). Back in the times of delve it was always a house just west of the North East Airfield. Now you see a lot of people taking places like the fort ruins, the cementary, or the prison, but these places are common bandit magnets, they love to hunt the people there and spook out for periods of time on the hills above usually on a rocky |

Now you see a lot of people taking places like the fort ruins, the cementary, or the prison, but these places are common bandit magnets, they love to hunt the people there and spook out for periods of time on the hills above usually on a rocky spot on a hill or behind a tree. If you choose to take one of these bandit magnets expect to be shot at a lot. The brutal facts of games like these are that much of the game is skill but there is a lot of random chance and luck involved, you should always consider trying to make a base in a low traffic area, this is a place you are going to protect to the last breath.
Now that you got a place you need to begin getting items to store, the main one is food and water at the beginning. You want to get about 10 food items and 10 drink items for each person. This will require you to go out to other towns and remember how to get back (get a compass), Now many survivors will disagree here but if you see someone in your town, kill them, Thats your base, theres a difference between being a bandit and being territorial, You have every right to kill them if they invade your homeland, if you choose to negotiate with them remember letting them in to your base puts you at risk, getting new survivors for your base is tricky. Which leads us to our next tip
As a survivor your best bet with a group is so have a set group of people you usually make a base with, know them and play with them all the time, this makes a bit of a solid relationship and you learn to depend on eachother and once you cooperate, most nomadic bandits should bug off, if they dont you should be more than equipt to handle them.
Do remember that not all bandits are 100% bandit, some bandits can be negotiated with just as other survivors, while I would never recommend surrendering to a bandit, or trading with them. If you want to make a peaceful resolution, respect your distance and request they do the same, if they do not respond(most bandits wont) then go full out and eliminate them, but some just want to pass by to go do more bandity things else where, most nomadics dont really wanna lose their stuff nor do they like to deal with groups of players but don't show too much aggression or they will take offence and kill as many as they possibly can before retreating or inevitably being killed. Just remember to not hesitate, if you fire shots at a bandit they will relentlessly hunt you until either they are totally disadvantaged ( out of ammo or nearly dead).
Once you have gotten plenty of food for your base head onto military camps and other high level camps that get your good weaponry, These are essential to dealing with said bandits, they they are much less likely to stick around shooting at you if you pop round the corner holding an mk48 and blazing rounds into their body.
Nearly all bandits when outgunned will retreat so dont be scared to put down suppressive fire (firing with low aim to keep the player hiding or to force them to run) With a your group this can be very deadly, you can keep the bandit stationary as your friend flanks around back and catches him by surprise, but do understand he will be watching in third person so he probably will know where you are. One thing to always consider when holding suppressive fire is to not waste bullets, only with drum mags or a Light Machine Gun(mk 48, m249) can you really hold long term suppressive fire, do not try to do so with only your side arm, the second a bandit hears a side arm he pops out and takes aim. Though that reaction can be exploited and you can simply switch back to your primary once you shoot your secondary and then take careful aim.
Do not move very much.. As a bandit i would always sit and listen to people moving, figuring out where they are, where they stay, what they are doing, how hostile they are, while most bandits are not so thorough with their clients, some are and many lower grade bandits still rely on sound a lot more than you'd expect, Jumping is a massive NO, they will always hear you jumping for mass distances, ive had probably 100-200 kills just based on hearing that jumping noise. Its difficult to never move, but just remember to avoid walking for no reason, or moving around while you think someone is watching you. Especially around your base, you want to try to take a high point in your territory and just watch gracefully from a 3rd person view, listening for any approaching players.
One thing you also need to consider early on is making an efficient door, one that you can lock in the chance some bandit gets you trapped and you have to take the last ditch effort into your lair. Know that its a bad idea to remain around your loot, people hear you this will lead them to the loot, the best idea is to remain a few buildings away or on a roof top so that you can easily hop down and unload into someone entering your base.
Eventually you are going to find binoculars, use them from a high point in your area, try to remain as little exposed as possible, its easy to peer out of a window from a 2nd-3rd story building without being seen. Try to identify people from a distance and if they seem to be heading in your direction send a message asking if they are friendly or not, if they do not respond expect to be in a gun fight in a matter of 30 seconds, If they say they are friendly either ask them to join your group(dangerous as it gives your position) or use the art of misdirection and tell them you can see them from another town in another direction, often times this will spark curiosity, and most of the time lead them away, or lead them unsuspectingly into your direction where you can use the art of surprise.
A last few small tips to help your common sense Dont use flash lights, chemlights or omnilights, Stare harder if you cant see in the dark, most bandits (especially myself) use the night time to move around and launch attacks on the enemy, many players are somewhat scared of the night time for unknown reasons to myself, Zombies seem to not be able to see as far, players are stationary during this time so you can take advantageous positions on players sitting in their comfort zone. Dont tell players where you are unless its in group chat (bandits are watching the chat very closely) and last but not least always wait till you are red in on the hunger or thirst bar. its usually just a waste on resources to eat at 50 percent.

Bandits.......
You gotta love to hate these guys, i loved hating me when i was a bandit, and sometimes i still play bandit as it is a GREAT deal of fun. But not as fun as being a base builder, you can do both but bandits are mainly nomadic(walk around instead of sitting in one area) SO let class begin
In my opinion there are 2 kinds of bandits. You have the bandits who follow a code, this is to provide large difficulty to the mid to high level grade players who are ready to take on bandits, then you have the bandits who are sitting around laughing to themselves thinking they are "such a boss" and running around gunning down beginners who are utterly defenseless, and be warned if i catch the second type no matter what role im playing ill see to your destruction.
Now heres the best advice i can give, like survivors, get a group of like minded bandits and become solid, you must learn each others tactics, how each other react to such things, you eventually know exactly how each other are going to do what they will do so you can come to rely and depend on them. Trusting them is another plus, after a few games with another bandit, the relationship is usually solid, you can begin to turn your back on them and not worry about taking lead to the head.
Bandits need gadgets to really be effective, compass is a big one, maps are essential, and a gps is an amazing luxury you shouldnt take for granted, Allowing you to choose your way points.
As a bandit with a code, there are two ways i play, you can go nomadic and decide where you will go, once you get to the place you decide you want to go, you have to first clear it, the best way to do so is to check the corners before entering, see as much as you can on the inside of a building from the outside, before entering, you want to clear it room by room floor by floor, never leave a single room unchecked and be prepared for a quick Close Quarter Combat situation. As a bandit Shoot first, ask questions later. Once the building is cleared you can either stay for a small amount of time and hold the position, see if any other players come by, or leave to go clear another high value location.
The second way i play is by camping(OH YES THAT'S RIGHT), Regardless of what raging dead people say, camping is a legitimate tactic used by the military since the beginning of guerrilla warfare. WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT? you say? Well, sitting and waiting on a target is a very effective way to remain silent and calm, and vigilant, you should be able to aim much better sitting from a high point somewhere, the best way to get kills is usually to Blast the audio and sit quietly waiting.
Never under estimate a side arm, you can easily kill people with them if they get too close, also in close quarter combat some times the best tactic is to spam your enemy with a barrage of bullets , do not go full auto though, this leads to hitting everything BUT the target, just shoot 3 shots at a time and aim for the torso, people would say aim for the head as it allows for faster kills but its more likely to miss and any missed shots are more likely to end in you dying.
Never get too full of yourself, All too often i see bandits talking mad smack about other players and then they die and rage quit cause they cant stand feeling stupid for talking as if they were gods, the smart bandits are the ones who rarely talk. People are tuned to pick up on aggressive behavior and when playing the role of a bandit you usually take aggressive tones, so its best to just suppress this. If you must talk usually only talking in responses is best.
Keep food and water at the back of your mind, several times ive killed bandits who were trying to stalk me but forgot to stock up on food and once pinned down you cant do much without taking a round or two, so its best to wait for your food and thirst bar to get to red. Campers must always pay careful attention to food and drink.
Keep in mind, retreating can save your stuff many times, I have gone many days in game without dying just from getting into fights being out gunned and then just backing off, Understand that you ARE NOT a demigod, you cannot defeat everything out there, some groups are simply going to out number you 4-1 and you really cannot do a thing about it.
Recognize tactics Flanking- retreating or running to a advantageous point to get a better shot
Suppressive fire- Shooting burst shots to keep you in cover generally to allow flanking
Camping- Sitting and watching in third person, only popping head out to shoot.
Zigzag maneuvers- These are to avoid heavy rounds, generally i carry a secondary primary rifle in my big for high capacity shooting incase the begin to zigzag.
Misdirection- Generally when fighting a group expect a lot of this, someone will stand from on point and fire off their weapon, you will focus on them as another player steps out from behind you and lights you up. this goes back to always watching your surroundings.
There are many other tactics im sure you can think of some your self
If you choose to use a code(much respect if you do) look at a players back pack when observing through binoculars, this will allow you to determine their progression level, generally avoid shooting people without a pack or just a fanny pack, they are usually just starting and of little threat to you, just dont under estimate the power of a makarov, if they notice you, and proceed to follow you, either warn them or just shoot them.
Last but not least all bandits should pay attention to when they choose to move, while most say night time is bad because zombies can kill you easier, they are ignorant to the ways the game actually works, zombies are of little danger in regular AR, you can usually just avoid them by moving through obstacles. Just avoid making too much noise for what is a bandit without the art of surprise? |

Heroes......
Okay so at the moment being a hero in AR is in many ways a bit of a joke, Getting the badges higher badges is just unrealistic, cause many players who play the role of bandit, dont always have bandit status, so a hero will have to fight in defense and in turn give up his chance for the badge this wont be such a shockingly long book as i dont much like this role, it has little purpose in current states of the game.
But the role is some what fun to play, basically you hunt bandits, there is a whole art to hunting bandits, its much more defined than what criteria bandits have to fit for hunting survivors, the heroes basically have to learn exactly where bandits are going to turn up, Bandits are a very habit based role, you can always expect their entry points and where they are going to go for advantageous positions. You as a hero have certain mandatory gadgets similar to the bandit, you need a compass, you need a map and a gps is pretty mandatory, for any hero to casually do his hero things. Most heroes use a combination of camping and nomadic behavior to achieve their goal.
The best way to succeed as a hero, is to think like a bandit, know what they do, how they do it, and what they will do after they do it, then try to counter act this, the best way to do so is to watch the chat, often times you can get a message from a players that goes something like " player xxxxxxx shot me at location xxxxxxx, he is a bandit" if you are in the area its best as a hero to gun the bandit down as he is likely to be gone as quickly as he came and killed the player
Keep extra blood packs, this goes for bandits aswell, you are going to be in and out of fights every 10-15 minutes, maybe even less if you are really efficient, Its essential to frequent medical centers and military tents, they can all hold plenty of blood bags. also plenty of weapons and ammo.
When hunting bandits misdirection can be the best tactic to kill them, basically fire off a mosin, go hide on a hill a ways away and wait to see who shows up, bandits are attracted to noise, survivors generally avoid noise. So if you fire off a gun and you see some curious soul wandering up, look for a bandit mask as its likely they are there to kill you.
Thats another huge thing heroes absolutely need, without binoculars to identify and determine who your enemy is, you are no better than a bandit
Goodluck to all you survivors, bandits, and heroes, Take it easy and hope to see you out there in the world. |
