no single entity can be blamed for the start of wwi.
the spark was the assassination of archduke franz ferdinand while he was sarajevo, the capital of bosnia herzogovina by the 'black hand' a serbian terrorist group attempting to liberate territory lost to the austrio-hungarian government.
however the real cause was the tangle of alliances the major powers of europe found themselves in. |

Pretty sure, Serbia disliked Austria for some reason i forgot.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand went to some meeting in Serbia, where the Serbian Blackhands (Assassin group. AC for the win doe) were waiting for them. This soon led to Austria declaring war on Serbia.
Austria had friends such as German to back them up.
Serbia had friends with Russia, Russia had friends with British and so on. |

It was all the alliances around Europe. Everyone felt obligated to join in.
The event that finally pushed everyone over the edge was when Gavrilo Principe (a member of the Black Hand) assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie of Austria. Austria blamed Serbia and declared war, Russia backed Serbia and Germany backed Austria. Germany then went through Belgium to get to France, so France entered the war. Then due to the Germans amassing a large navy, the British joined in. Finally, due to the German unrestricted submarine warfare, the US joined in. |

@LordDio
It was mainly caused by the conflict between Serbia and Austria-Hungary.
The Archduke Franz Ferdinand, nephew of the Austrian-Hungary emperor, was assassinated and alliances that were formed years in the past in an attempt to prevent wars ended up getting sucked in.
In retrospect, it was the whole of Europe's fault for getting so involved. |

| Ultimately there were tensions growing with militarism and imperialism so war was going to happen whether or not the arch duke was assassinated or not. USA literally jumped in the war at the end and was like okay well everyone else is winning we are gunna go auto win. |

serbia was slavic and nationalism was prevalent at the time.
russia, also slavic, was allied with serbia and warned the austro-hungarians that if they went to war with serbia that they would intervene (austria-hungary loved to get involved in balkan affairs and likely used the death of franz ferdinand as an excuse to annex serbia).
russia however was allied to france, and germany was allied to austria-hungary. germany told russia they needed to stop mobilizing their men or they would intervene on behalf of austria-hungary.
by this point france had begun mobilizing and the germans decided to pre-emptively declare war on them, enacting their decades old 'schliffen plan' calling for an invasion of france through belgium where the defenses were lighter.
great britain was appalled by this as prussia had signed a document recognizing belgium's sovereignty as a neutral state (like switzerland) and prussia had essentially become germany so their signature on that document still mattered.
the us got involved because of british propaganda.
the end. |

@Squid
There are many factors that played a part in causing the actual war, but the assassination of Franz Ferdinand was the first spark.
It's funny too, because The Triple Alliance was originally formed to prevent war.
Then France, as a rival of Germany, decided to form The Triple Entente to combat Germany's newly found friends. |
