I believe that Facebook bought the Oculus Rift because they knew that Google Glass was going to be a success when released. Most successful software companies have converted to hardware and Facebook is no exception. If Facebook released this sort of software before Google it would probably be more successful. (E.g. Compare iPhone sales to other non-Apple tablets.)
The reason they bought Oculus Rift was probably just because they didn't have the time and didn't want to waste money developing new hardware so instead they just bought another company that was close to realising similar hardware.
They won't be using it for gaming. This is going to be a social thing similar to Google Glass.
While hardware takes time to develop, software doesn't take as long.

'They won't be using it for gaming. This is going to be a social thing similar to Google Glass.'
Will it still be able for gaming use? |
