We religious folk tend to lean towards that kind of reaction when you belittle our beliefs and dismiss them as fairytales.
Just sayin'. |

Yes, because not believing what you believe is enough justification to threaten to kill someone. Logic.

No no, I can accept when someone doesn't agree with my beliefs.
It's when they "belittle" my beliefs, saying they are juvenile and childish, that I should grown up and stop believing fairytales that one might read to a child as a bedtime story that I start to get angry. |

@tahu - Did you read the title of this thread? In America, simply telling someone you're an atheist is taken as a huge insult. You don't have to belittle the person you're telling for the reaction to occur. Honestly, it's truly horrifying to me when I see how ignorant people like you are of the discrimination that takes place against those who disbelieve in a god. The internet and the real world are two very different places.

Perhaps I live in and amongst the more rational of my fellow Christians, but I also live in America and I have never seen someone threatened for professing Atheism.
Like I said, I can fully accept when someone doesn't believe what I believe, no harm done. If the subject comes up I'll say that I believe in something else, and if the person is willing to listen I'll tell them about what I believe, but I'll never try to force them to believe what I believe and I'll never threaten them. Nor have I seen any of my peers attempt to force someone to believe or threaten someone. And being a military brat, I've been lots of places, so I'm not basing all of this on one group of people that I've been around all my life either.
And, even if despite all this I am still ignorant, I don't think the ignorance about prosecution is unique to the religious side off the coin. I'm not sure you Atheists realize just how vicious you can be trying to disprove religion. It's apparently an outrage when a Christian is allowed to speak on public television, regardless of the topic. The findings of Christian Scientists are considered less valid than the findings of Atheist Scientists simply because they are Christian. You've run banners and billboards that insult our beliefs at Christmas time. From our perspective at least, where we seek to convert you seek to snuff out and violently destroy.

@tahu - You'll want to take to heart my last sentence. The Internet and the real world are two very different places. The most vocal of atheists are no different than the most vocal of Christians. I challenge you to make people like Ken Ham seem any more innocent than people like Christopher Hitchens.
Likewise, the most moderate of atheists are no different than the most moderate of Christians. I would say that over 80% of my real life friends are religious people (not fundamentalists, obviously) and we are capable of having intelligent PEACEFUL discussions about our beliefs.
Religious people claim that the most outspoken of them are extremists... And it's no different for us.
