Let's think for a moment.
What is really the best thing to do for your children?
How about taking them to church, yet still telling them you, personally, don't believe it. Let them hear it, and digest it so they can form their own opinions. But hey, that's just me. Your choice. |

i've been thinking about this for a while i'm probably going to raise them Christian then once they move out I'll view it as "It's their life now. If they want to convert I can't stop them and if I could, I wouldn't."

i'm just not even going to mention it
i'm going to let them decide on their own when they're old enough to make a decision like that |

| Eh, the concept of death isn't someone you can be eased into. Just tell them what you believe, and let them figure the rest out. |

| just answer any questions they might have about death or faith as honestly as you can. let them know what systems exist, what you believe and why, and why it's all false because their grandparents are actually being eternally tortured by cthulhu in his ancient underground city of ry'leh so perhaps they may be eliminated first when he rises to the surface |

let 'em think for themselves
if they want to be religious, let them be religious
if they want to be an atheist, let them be an atheist
you get the point
★One does not simply say, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words are merely the smallest element of language capable of containing meaning in isolation and as such can never directly produce the 4000 newtons of force per square centimeter required to break bones."★ |

Present both of those ideas to them and make them make up their own decision.
However if you're an atheist and you tell them that they are in heaven, all you are doing is feeding them a lie.

You could teach them to be atheist If you go to a funeral, you could juts talk about how great of people they were in their life.

I'm going to teach my kids a variety of beliefs. Primarily portions of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Jainism (ahimsa) with a healthy portion of spiritual agnosticism. Let them make their own decision at an older age, but raise them with the structure and morality of religion without the actual religion part.
As for your question of death: Everything is impermanent. People die. It will happen. That allotted number of steps, so to speak, is why we must live our lives not only how we wish, but enjoying it as well. Don't tell them of heavens and hells. Tell them of this life that they have been given. Remind them that it is all right to miss loved ones, but it is useless and only self-destructive to hold on to what is no longer there. Don't be harsh about it; they are only children, but don't be soft about it and lie. |
