@Baconite, that's sleep paralysis and I've already suffered from that (I saw brightly coloured electron microscope bacteria floating past my room in a blue light.) That only happens if you force it.

The true way to start lucid dreaming is to:
-Write a dream journal.
-Do reality checks when you wake up.
-Think about having a lucid dream before you sleep.

Sleep paralysis can be horrifying

It really varies

It could just be like a room spinning, or it could be horrible vivid nightmares

Or you can be aware of the nightmare, and calm the flop down because you know it's a nightmare.

Sleep paralysis is a disorder, actually. You just experienced REM atonia.

I've done lucid dreaming before, but lately I haven't had the time.

@MattDominator, whilst it happens you can't move any part of your body and your breathing is decreased so much that you feel like your suffocating. I think its where your dream overlaps with reality. (Because you can't control your movement in your sleep and you breath less.)

Hey, how do you break out of sleep paralysis easily? I always have to concentrate really hard, then I am able to get up. I don't lucid dream, but it just happens sometimes. Annoying...

@Baconite, that's a recurring nightmare, sleep paralysis is where your dreams overlap with reality. Basically you don't wake up because your dreaming whilst awake.

@deltav, it's a very hallucinogenic experience.

@Matt, I agree completely, at least I didn't have a figure floating above my body nose to nose with me staring into its cold black eyes. The bit where you can hardly breathe or move is the scary part.

@Gog

I've been interested in lucid dreams forever. I write in my dream journal, but I keep forgetting to do reality checks.
Anyway, here's a few tips

-Program your dream. It means to think about how you dream will go as you fall asleep. It'll help. Entering a lucid dream with no intention might make you wake up.
-Immerse yourself in LDing. Talk about it with other people, go on forums, research, etc..
-When you enter a lucid dream, never ever lose awareness. Every few seconds, remind yourself you are dreaming. A few seconds of unawareness will make you lose your lucidity
