| I'm confused about the terms used by people on this forum. If you can clarify and define some terms I would be grateful. I'm especially looking for a response from people like Midmyst. |

| US Politics is a complex entity. Would you like to know any specific terms, or just a general outlook? |

The major political parties in the United States are the Democrats and the Republicans. Currently, the Democrats espouse a progressive (think social-democrat) ideology and the President, Barack Obama, is a member of that party.
The Republicans have a more conservative outlook, espousing family values, tradition, and a free market economy.
There are also some third parties that say the two major parties both corrupt. These are the Green and Libertarian parties. Greens espouse also a social-democratic viewpoint, but it's a bit more grassroots and environmentally-oriented.
Libertarians want respect for both civil/social/political liberties, and economic freedom. They support a laissez faire capitalist society.
The President is elected every 4 years and can be elected for a maximum of 2 terms, and Congress is the main legislative organ of the US with 2 houses; the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Some controversial issues are gun control, LGBT marriage, universal health care, the welfare state, the US' foreign policy, Christianity, etc.

The United States of America is using a representative democracy. This means that people elect representatives to represent them in the government. However, people tend to have different views. This leads to political parties. Political parties are groups of politicians who seek a common cause. There are 2 main political parties in the USA: the Democrats and the Republicans. The Democrats are leaning towards the left. The Republicans are leaning towards the right.
Leftism is more focused on equality. Rightism is more focused on liberty. There is another party known as the Libertarians. The Libertarians are sort of the middle ground in all of this. They take traits from both leftism and rightism to combine into a seemingly perfect ideology. That is why libertarianism is so popular because it promotes values that people can agree on. |
