I want you to think for a moment; think of an afterlife, but not the one you typically understand. It's not a heaven or a hell, it's a parallel world similar to ours, except everyone is dead.
You're probably thinking something akin to "Well, duh"
You don't understand. What is meant is that everyone there is bones. A skeleton. They rot in reverse, as they reach their own "deaths", they start to seem more alive, first comes the gangreen flesh filled with maggots, which heals closed until blood flows through their entire body again.
This is when a child is born. For ages, the world of the living, and the world of the dead have been out of balance. This is problematic, as there are only a finite number of souls. The amount of souls in the world of the dead still runs strong...
For now.
You are a Death Walker, a sacred guardian of the balance of life and death. You possess an odd ability called "Shifting" which allows you to leave one foot in the grave, so to speak, and walk among the world of the dead in your dead form, and return to the living without having to be reborn.
The year is 2685, and a population explosion is nearing. With the current 70 billion population across all the planets, only 30 billion souls remain beyond the veil. For a time, this will be fine, since humans are likely to die colonizing other planets, however, in TerraCorps attempts to bring their stock up, they are offering incentives to increase population in order to colonize even more worlds.
If TerraCorps succeeds in their plan, the balance will be overthrown completely and destroy both realms.
Rules:
1. What I say, goes. Sorry.
2. Mary Sues and Gary Stus will be allowed, and later slaughtered mercilessly(Thanks, soardlo.)
3. What is the Death Walkers' special ability? Put its name in 'Other' on your character sheet.
4. Your character's dead form is determined by their age. The older your character is, the less dead their dead form looks. A character in their 20s is a slightly bloodied skeleton, a character in theirs 80s will look almost completely alive, maybe slightly pale, etc.
5. whenever you leave the world of the dead, you will show up in a corresponding location in the world of the living. This can be used to pass obstacles.

Name: Carlos Fogo
Age: 25
Gender: M
Living Appearance: Carlos appears to be a hispanic male in his mid 20s, with a slight mustache, black hair, hazel eyes, and somewhat rounded-pointy facial features. He is very thin, and wears embroidered blue and red clothing. He always carries an ornamental cutlass with him, but it has been sharpened. He has a small cloak that hangs from his left shoulder.
Dead Appearance: Carlos dead form is a blood spattered skeleton, with pointed cheek bones and a thinnish jaw, wearing the grimy attire of a civil war union soldier, carrying a rusted yet mysteriously sharp cutlass, which can somehow shrink till it can fit on a keyring.
Possessions: the aforementioned cutlass, a piece of paper on which the key code for his fighter starship is written, a small sharpened dagger.
Planet of Residence: Zeus station, orbiting Neptune
Bio: Carlos has been a Death Walker as long as he can remember. From the moment of his birth, his parents would fret when he mysteriously disappeared only to reappear again in a place he shouldn't have been able to reach. Ever since he was five, he'd been honing his skills to feel the balance, despite his friends' insistence that he's crazy.
Other: I'm not giving away the code, nor do I have to, since I created this bloody thread. |

I wander around Zeus station a bit, waiting for the repairs on my ship to finish. I spot a wikimedia terminal. Hm. There's a man in a black coat using it.
I approach the terminal, waiting to use it when I spot what the man's doing. He's re-wiring the terminal for some reason. |

Percival glances around the church around him. It's empty, the murals of religious figures all around. He was a religious man.
Was.
Now that he knew he was a death walker... It just didn't feel right anymore. He gently places his small personal bible on his old podium. Preaching for 30 years, all for nothing.

Ugh. This guy is taking too long with that wikimedia terminal. He's probably some petty criminal. I leave for the space dock and get my ship. I fly to earth so I can schedule an appointment and the Hub.
The port authority is being obstinate as always. I sign the paperwork here and there to confirm my docking and my appointment at the Hub. The Hub was an area just outside the solar system that, in 2099 was found to contain gravitational anomalies that allowed for wormholes to be opened.
That was when we started colonizing. The resources that could be accessed from the Hub were astronomical. Literally.
I walk out of the dock and into the city. One of the last of the old churches was here. They're so beautiful, but except for the historical monuments, most of them had been demolished in favour of more modern designs. |

I walk into the church after a man I saw walking in there. There's another man at the altar, probably praying, but I don't know. I take a moment to admire the decor. It's quiet in here.
And with that, I Shift, and step into the realm of the dead, disappearing right before the eyes of anyone looking at me in the church.
In the realm of the dead, the church is equally quiet. The stained glass windows change from live depictions of holy scenes to deathly images of skeletal beings performing the same actions. The altar isn't there in the world of the dead. Bingo.
I walk to the spot where the altar should be, and open a trap door, descending into the catacombs below. |

I hear someone approaching behind, and I draw my rusted blade. I swiftly turn around to see a black skeleton with golden eyes staring down the trapdoor at me. I point the tip of my cutlass at him and say "What are you doing here?"

"I think I should ask that question also. Tell me, before I rip your guts out and use it as a rope. Wait, you don't have any! HAHAHAHAH!" I say.
(Note: My char is also slightly demented/insane at times.) |

| "Wait a minute..." I say, gazing into Auren's eyes. "You aren't dead. You're a Walker. Are you on the same mission I am?" I mention my mission cautiously. I'm hoping he's more loyal to the Death Walkers than to his psychosis. |
