“I still don’t get this belief of yours- you’ve not explained what this ‘meaning’ is.” Olaf said to his friend, putting strain upon ‘is’.
With a sigh of exasperation, Erik went on to reiterate what he had said at least a hundred times.
“There isn’t a set meaning, but there is”- placing a similar, and somewhat mocking strain upon the ‘is’- “a meaning. It’s just one that you’ve gotta find yourself.”
“Oh? So what’s yours?” Olaf responded to his friend, carrying a once again belittling tone to his voice.
“I..." Erik paused. "I don't know.", he admitted.
“And if you don’t know what your meaning is, how do you know that there is any meaning at all?”
“I don’t know. I just do- I’ll have one someday, a purpose. Everyone will.”
Olaf shrugged his shoulders. He didn't want to crush his friend's worldview; no one would gain anything from it.
Erik relaxed for a bit, then glanced over to the clock to his side- it was about twenty past nine- Erik shot up. “I’ve got to go! I’ll see you soon, Olaf.”
He got up and as quick as he could, and made his way out of the room, before Olaf could even manage to say goodbye to his friend.

Leaving Olaf’s house, Erik found himself upon the edge of his small town. A quaint thing, Hunterston, it survived mostly as you might expect- hunting. He had to make his way across the entire length of the town, which, while no great feat, would take time he didn’t have. He knew that the quickest route would be for him to climb up the gear and go half way up the great oak. He’d then need to make the jump onto the church roof, and then jump over the squat town walls. From there, the cabin was a short walk.

So he went- he went to go and climb up the great gear; a large, bronze cog that was older than the town itself. From its centre grew a sturdy oak, became known as the Great Oak. The purpose of the gear was unknown; a great mystery. It was unknown whether the town sprung up around the gear, or the gear came from old denizens, but as long as Erik had lived, it was a symbol of home. The gear served as protection- countless long summer days sat on top of it, hiding under the shade of the Oak. Countless boring days of winter scrambling to the top and pushing friends around.

He approached the grand object, kneeled, and rubbed his hands in some dirt- he needed a good grip. It was a roughly made thing, providing some purchase that most climbers couldn’t exploit.

Erik was not most climbers.

He managed to make his way up the seven foot tall cog in a matter of minutes. An adept, he pulled himself up as if he had made the journey a thousand times- and the truth was, he had. Each movement of his body had been recited a hundred times before. It was a cant, one known by all the children in the town and practiced extensively. It was a cant of love, one practiced with your body, one with not a spoken word. It required very little thought on his part. In moments, he was atop the cog, and looking at the town that surrounded him.

The citizens built none of the houses in any specific manner, but rather in a haphazard mess. A few were between the spokes of the cog, a few followed the stream, and there were a few placed in rather strange places; a product of stochasticity. It had grown organically, and was neither on the whole spread out nor packed together; in some areas it was dense and in others quite sparse. Usually, it was the families that ended up being so close to one another.

Erik, catching his breath for a bit, steeled himself and grabbed the thick and gnarled trunk of the Great Oak. He began his short climb to a large and sturdy branch that jutted out towards the Church. Scrambling on its underside, he moved along. In moments he found hanging from it above the church; here, his instincts stopped. Climbing was natural to him, but jumping onto the stone roof of a church was not.

Erik began to gulp down some breaths of the sharp winter, comfortable where he was. After some deliberation, he let go.

One could only put so much thought into falling. Erik tried to turn in midair as he’d seen cats do. He was only somewhat successful, falling half-way on the arm, which deadened. He stood himself up, and began to run across the well-maintained roof of the church. He grinned to himself as he thought of what the priests must be thinking, and running down the sharp angle of the roof, once again made a jump, if more controlled.

e, he fell just outside his intended target, partially knocking himself on the city wall. Once again, he tried to maneuver in mid-air, only to fail, fall deadened by dirt. He got up, with some level of difficulty, and made the now short journey to the hunting lodge, a touch humiliated.

He began to cut through the forest, as the lodge was somewhat detached from town. It was relaxing to him, the forest, the familiar sound of crunching leaves and the heavy silence that hung in the air, a peaceful break. Soon, he had the hunting lodge in his sight.

His journey was interrupted, however, by a rustling in the trees. He stopped and looked to his right. A terrifying beast met him- he’d heard of such creatures, though he had never seen anything like it before. Everything about it dwarfed the stories he had heard; It was massive, making him into an ant, with a singular malicious eye. It’s strangely familiar lips turned into a hideous snarl, white teeth matching white fur.

It raised a single paw, tentatively, as though sensing the air, and time seemed to freeze for Erik as it lowered it and ruffled, as though preparing to pounce.

Erik began to scream, and the monster began to roar- Erik saw a brown blur, then another, and suddenly there was grizzle and blood all over him.

“Erik!”

The boy looked to the source of the voice and saw his father standing beside a tree, his bow hanging in his right hand. The older man called out to his son, and beckoned him to come closer.

“Are you alright?”, he asked as Erik ran towards him.

Erik only nodded, though he was shaking- he didn’t trust himself to speak without his voice breaking. Shaking somewhat as well, his father let his bow drop, embracing Erik.

After having a moment, the boy searched for a bit, and managed to find his voice once more.
"I'm fine." He said, trying to seem stoic- however, the shakiness of his voice gave destroyed any chance of that being impressed upon his father, who nodded anyways.
The older man grabbed two of the legs of the creature, and began dragging the incredibly large over. They worked in silence, his father letting Erik recuperate for the hunt- with how loud the two screamed, anyways, there wasn’t likely to be too much game in the area.

Making it back to town, the grizzled hunter deposited the body by the butcher and handed the butcher a few gold pieces.

"You ready to hunt?"
"Aye."
"Let's go, then."
The boy and his father made their short trek back to the hunting cabin. Along the way, Erik sought to ask his father about what he and Olaf had been talking about.
"Hey, dad?"
"Yes, boy?"
"What's the meaning to life?"
His father paused for a moment, not saying anything. A smile came to his face; the smile of a father who knew what to say to his child- or possibly, the smile of a man who was about to dupe a fool.
"Whatever you want it to be, son."

"That's what I said to Olaf, but he said that there wasn't a meaning to life, at all."
His father frowned, as he held open the door to the hunting lodge.
"Your bow and quiver are by the cupboard," he said, absentmindedly. "You should pay no attention to what Olaf says."
"But why? How do we know he's not right?" Erik said, as he went to picked up his bow and quiver. He looked upon his father from the other end of the hunting lodge, and gave himself a moment to take in his surroundings. Though truth be told, beyond the furs that hung from the ceiling, there wasn't much to see in this little shack. His father told him to get a move on, and stop daydreaming.

It was a short hike up to the hunting grounds, during which both members of the party remained silent. Erik was always told to be quiet up in this forest, as not to spook the potential pray; but also, to not attract any possible threats. Like his father, Erik paid close attention to the ground, to avoid stepping on a twig and snapping it. It wasn’t nearly as natural or smooth a motion for him, but he did well enough. The ground was littered with red and yellow leaves; Erik tried to mentally project the scarlet blood onto the ground, and visualized a shocking contrast. He mused to himself that it was odd that blood and dead leaves should be remote; they are both signs of death.

His father's arm shot out in front of him and stopped him from moving forward. Using a hand gesture that consisted of the index and middle finger, Erik's father pointed Erik towards the Sabat that had not yet noticed them. The father lowered his middle finger down to his fist, a silent order for Erik to take the shot.

There was no time to think, only a smooth series of nocking the bow and readying a homemade arrow.

Erik breathed in cool, crisp air, to steady his shaking hands. His hands always shook before a kill. He hated it; it was a sign of a bad hunter, in his eyes. He looked to the ground and mentally judged where to place his feet as he took his position. The bow was pointed to the ground as the young boy drew his arrow, and then notched it. He raised his tool, pointing it at his target- the creature's long, exposed neck. The bowstring was drawn, and shortly after, released.

The arrow flew towards the predator and pierced its neck; the beast fell to the floor with a deathly thud. It made no sound as it fell, making its collapse even more eerie; it seemed as if the beast made no protest to its demise. (Idea, make it miss?) (idk, we should talk about it on weekend maybe)
Erik's father began to approach the fallen creature, dagger in hand. This was as much a learning experience as one of survival. Erik watched as his dad plunged a serrated knife into a dying creature; as the crimson flowed out onto the beast's white fur.

Erik's thoughts were interrupted by his father calling him, telling him to come and help take the beast back to the hunting lodge. Two Sabats could easily feed Erik and his family for a week, and they’d still have meat left over to sell to the butcher's. This was by virtue of the beast's twelve meter tongue, it's muscular aphysique, and it's large organs. It was lucky that it's neck was so long, as it made them an easy kill to the trained hunter. That neck is, however, the same neck that held the beast's formidable weapon- it’s long tongue, that doubles as a club.

These thoughts and old lessons lurched through Erik's mind as he grasped the beast by its left foreleg, after his father had flipped it onto it's back. His father came to grab the right foreleg, and they both began to pull. The journey back to town, whilst carrying such a beast, was always a long exertion.
As they neared the butcher’s shop once again, Erik caught something out of the corner of his eyes. A glint of sorts, a shimmering. After asking his father, he was let off to go and explore. It was around midday, so he had plenty of time, and he was being much more careful in case of Sabat. Fortunately, they usually seemed to not like the day, and thus he encountered none; though throughout the entire journey, Erik refused to lower his guard.

Eventually he found what had caught his eye, in a somewhat overgrown portion of the forest. It was a cave, probably collapsed not too long ago, making the entrance inaccessible. He briefly wondered why he’d never heard of it, but disregarded such thoughts as he once again rubbed his hands in the dirt; he’d need to focus on clambering through this mess if he had any chance of actually managing to climb it.

He began to navigate the rubble of the cave, upturning some dust as he went. Only a few minutes into his entering of the cave he was met with what seemed to be a sheer cliff face of rubble; it completely blocked his path. After some climbing, however, Erik managed to find his way at the top of the rubble- and found a small gap that he could just squeeze through, between the stones and the cave ceiling. He took a moment to clamber down, and then entered the cave proper.

Exploration was deep set in Erik’s nature- although he’d always been a somewhat sickly and weak youth, he had always been running around, learning every nook and cranny of Hunterston. With effort, he’d recently been able to put on a bit of muscle, but he was always working harder, which seemed unfair to him. Erik wasn’t one to complain, but it was always there. A nagging doubt, an idea that he was somehow inferior to the other boys, not as good, not as strong.

The bow, as it turned out, had suited him well, and he developed a compact, wiry frame to use it. He wasn’t talented at magic, and the wise man seemed to find zero capability in him, so he simply tried his best at being the hunter his father is. If that meant he had to work twice as hard as the others, he would.

The cave, as he made his way into it, seemed strangely lit, by some sort of all encompassing dim light. Magic, maybe? As Erik penetrated a little into the cave, he found the walls somewhat straightening out, until they seemed to turn to harsh corners, seemingly man made. Eventually, Erik found himself met with the frame of a door, wood rotted away long, long ago. The walls here were sharp, and pillars, incredibly smooth, lined them.

Wasting no time thinking about the room, Erik entered it and peered in. As he entered, the light seemed to dim, so it took him a moment to adjust, but after a few minutes, he was able to see a podium of sorts, with a large, leather bound book that lay on top of it. Erik couldn’t read very well, but was able to mark out the words “Journal of Yeron, Magus.”

Flipping it open, Erik was able to read a few words, such as “North” and “people”, but most seemed obscured to him, perhaps warped with age, or maybe it was just the lighting. The letters seemed to dance, and Erik suddenly felt very tired. Stretching, he shook his head to wake himself up.

The lair of a Mage, then? It would have explained the strange lighting. Erik contemplated pocketing the book, but decided to leave it for the time being. He began to examine the rest of the room, and found a small, tidy desk carved from stone, set in the wall, with a hole in it for ink. Next to it was a well rusted hammer and anvil, and the walls were covered with strange runes that were faintly familiar, meticulously carved. Erik took a quick look around, and decided to come back the next day- clearly this place had much to explore. He scrambled out of the winding passage of the cave, eventually making it to the light of day.

Yawning and stretching, he made the short trek home, the sun hanging low and heavy in the sky, excited for dinner. He’d had Sabat only once before, but his father was an excellent cook, and it was perfect for comfort food, after a long day of exploration in the tantalizing cave system.
not too sure what to add, from here.
i suppose more exploring?
yeah that’s what i’ll do.yes

Erik rose early the following morning, managing to beat the Sunday dawn. Sunday was traditionally a day of rest in Hunterson; the children would go out and play as their parents cooked a dinner that would contribute to a large feast that would be held later that day, in the village's church. Most of the children played within the village; but Erik was almost never found amongst them any longer. He would be in the woods, in the trees, enjoying what it was to be outdoors.
On that Sunday, however, he did not greet the trees; he was exploring the cave he had found recently, and the lair that lay within it. Though it was a small area, composed only of four rooms- a study, filled with books that were of no interest to an illiterate like Erik, a room that Erik named the 'Museum', due to the many objects that it displayed, a bedroom, and what appeared to be some sort of dining room. Erik found himself spending most of his time the Museum.

The Museum had a taller ceiling than the other rooms, being about ten feet off the floor. It was also the largest room, to which the three others and the entrance were all connected. It was a simple room, which if it were lacking of any furnishing, would be little more than a large rectangle.

It was heavily adorned in furnishing, however. There seemed to be an attempt to create order by the designer, evidenced by the four by three grid of tables that was arranged in the centre of the room; each one with an oddity upon it. Around those, however, this illusionary order quickly disappeared; there were display cases and artifacts all over the place, though all of them were upright. Swords and skeletons of beasts were attached to the ceilings and the walls, and the whole thing seemed to cluttered and cramped that one would scarcely have space to breathe, were it not for the few feet that existed between the tables.

It was here that Erik fell in love with the cave.

The first item that caught his attention was a green cube, made of some sort of rock, that was to the right of the entrance. It captured his eyes due to the fact that it emanated a strong light, that bathed everything around it in a cool green glow. As Erik approached, he was puzzled to see that the cube seemed to grow dimmer; and when he went to pick up the surprisingly heavy cube, it went out completely.

His spine shivered at the thought of him holding a magical object right in his own hands; it was amazing! He'd never seen any magic beyond the most simple spells, let alone an enchantment that reacted to his own presence. He placed the cube back onto its pedestal, eager to be further amazed by what the museum had to offer.

To the right of the cube there was a beautifully crafted butterfly, that seemed to be made out of a tin-like metal. It had small jewels where it's eyes were, but otherwise it seemed to be an accurate replica of the real thing. The figurine even replicated the beautiful colours of the insect- when Erik moved, the light danced on the metallic surface in the most lovely ways. The boy went to go and pick up the figurine, and to his surprise and wonderment, it came alive under his touch. Erik let out a gasp as it's left wing fluttered, and then it's right, and allowed his face to give way to one of utter amazement when the winged creature began to take off, fluttering about the Museum and crashing into a wall.attention was turned to one of the objects that it landed on. It was a somewhat unremarkable thing, something that you wouldn't notice when you first walked in- though it had an allure to it, that seemed to the boy utterly irresistible. He walked towards the midnight black orb that was propped up by a small tripod, and read the plaque on its table. Or, rather, tried to read it and failed.

Erik was curious; his mind had completely gone off the butterfly. He reached out, slowly, to touch the orb. He didn't quite know why he was moving so slowly, nor did he know why he felt such an odd sense of caution towards the object- though he reasoned that he was simply weary of any magical enchantments that may be upon the object.
As his finger made contact with the orb, a bright green flash completely overtook his entire field of vision, blinding him- he instinctively closed his eyes, and everything seemed to implode on itself, turning black.
