well I just do a few things but for now I leave you at this.
squeeze your nose with your fingers every few minutes.
it increases your chances of dreaming by a lot. |

One weird method we've got was eat a banana before bed.
Sure, eating a banana makes my brain more active but no luck when actually inside the dream. |

Create a trigger for yourself, for example, if bananas make you alert as you say, always keep an eye out for bananas. Note their location and context to make sure it's correct
Once you train yourself to consciously look for bananas all the time, you'll notice when the bananas are out of place when you're dreaming, which will tell you that you're dreaming.
You'll either lucid dream or wake up.
