I'm going to throw something out there, just to see how people react to the idea.

Let's say I'm an amazing builder. I can construct masterpieces. However, I can't script at all. Terrible at it. This of course could work inversely, I'm an amazing scripter but just can't figure out how to put the parts together. For the sake of simplicity, let us just stick with the mindset of a builder. One way you could combat this issue is to join a development studio where you have a group of teamates who have skillsets that compliment each other. I think this approach has already been taken and probably has seen some success.

What I don't think we've seen, is somebody who is an awesome builder decide to put their focus into just creating a series of models. High quality models, not the kind of simple models you'd currently find in the Free Models section, but actual quality models that look great ascetically, and function well in a game.

Why has nobody done this? Of course, the answer is probably that the builder finally sat down and tasked themselves to learn how to script, thus completing the package of awesome builder and decent scripter. However, hypothetical situations are fun so let's do hypothetical situations.

If I am an awesome builder, do I really want to release my models into the public sphere? What would I get out of that? At most, some name recognition. This of course brings back the idea of selling models. If I am an awesome builder, do I not deserve to be able to sell my models? Would developers who could sell models make enough robux to use the DevEx? Of course, one of the counter arguments to selling models is that Free models are an awesome learning tool for new builders, and making them into paid models would reduce the chance that somebody could dissect that model and learn how to build for themselves, which probably wouldn't be nice. We want people to be able to learn how to build.

So, one word-wall later, and I get to my point/idea. What if a developer who makes awesome models, like really quality models, could earn a commission of sorts, from their models. If a game uses that free model, the creator of that model would get a small fraction of what the game creator is earning. In my head, I'm thinking that if people had a selection of models, ranging from really bad, to outstanding, they would always take the outstanding models. And, considering these new models are outstanding, people would be more inclined to use the models, since they know they are getting a quality creation. On the other side of the spectrum, people who make bad models wouldn't get as many takes and thus earn no profit at all. However, if a prolific model maker had 4 or 5 models in a front page game for a period of time, they could potentially earn some serious cash, maybe enough to cashout of the DevEx. This would be done with one ultimate goal in mind: get people building more quality things, which is of course one of the main purposes of the DevEx. I think with this type of system, we would see more people making good models, including the people who are skilled enough to create wonderful games.

SO FINALLY, I have some questions. Do you guys think people who make models deserve some sort of compensation? Are people who only make models Developers? If they are developers, should they receive enough compensation to take advantage of the DevEx, even if they don't make a full game of their own? inb4tldr

I think they shouldn't have released the models in the first place, people need to learn, not skip hard work and throw some random crap in their games. It's how the past generation did it, its how I did it, and it's worked out pretty damn well so far.

Aha, so that presents another problem.

So, sure. We've encouraged great builders to start releasing models. However, now other users just take those models and end up at the front page. The model creator would earn a commission, however the place creator is earning more. This raises the problem of, how can we compare users who actually build their games with users who take advantage of high quality models.

Solution to that. A game creator who uses more than 5 free models in their place earns 1 ticket every 2 place visits?

Easily bypassed be taking said model, republishing, and using your version in your game.

I can see problems with trying to pay according to free model count, such as simple things in the background like admin scripts, day/night scripts, scripts that people insert to get the concept then delete, ect.

I don't think it'd work out well.

Hmmm yes that would be a massive issue. Of course, everything I'm bringing up is super hypothetical, so I'll ask a crazy question. How could that be prevented? Could there be a possible future property available to model developers that would allow them to release their models, but also lock them to prevent their names from being changed, or to prevent parts of them from being re-uploaded?

I think that ROBLOX could work on making encrypted models.

Making models so that they can't be re-uploaded (the encryption would prevent it), and they couldn't see the scripts. They could simply insert, move or remove them.

This is something I've wanted before. Add onto the thought.

btw, you'd just see it as a single object, no children, class name would be "EncryptedModel" or whatnot

The encryption stuff would also remember who the creator was, so he could ungroup the model and work on it if he needed to. Maybe even set permissions on the website.

Then, how about a user can't make a model of another model.

I think that might cause a problem with games that have user-made maps in them, since another user created them it would end up counting as a free model.

But yeah I like my idea, it'd be pretty awesome if I could upload things I made and not have them stolen. I think the encryption thing would really work.

I'd be able to open-source a lot more of my stuff for everyone to use, I used to do that but it got stolen and credit taken away from me. Even re-uploaded and blatantly stolen.

They should make an update where if you upload a free model to your game the free model will disappear completely when people play your game.
