Tato. You put a bunch of college kids and put them up against the most dominant country in hockey at the time, and you'd expect the Americans to be completely dominated.
But they won. That's why it's so special. Barely anyone expected the Americans to beat the USSR, especially when hockey in America wasn't extremely relevant. It's that it sparked interest in hockey and brought a lot more Americans to hockey than before.
It's not just the fact that we beat the USSR. It's the circumstances and what it did for American hockey as a whole.

"when we played our best vs. russia's best, we always won"
Kinda cheated with "the Slash" in the 1972 Summit Series, barely won. Then lost in the 1974 Summit Series. |

"super cool it was one win, and you haven't won since. which is special considering that
a) the USSR/russia has weakened b) the USA has gotten much better"
But other countries have gotten better. Are we the best? Clearly not. 9/10 times, the USSR would have won. It was just something special that came together and happened.
"the US also had 13/20 players on that team continue onto the NHL, canada has 12. that says a lot. you had an elite college class that was extremely underrated entering a competition that few countries even cared about"
And if America had not won that game and gone on to win the gold, what would have happened? They probably would have floundered in college or been nobodies. And hockey wouldn't be nearly as big as it is now. Russia completely dominated almost every other country that was there. So it says something that a group of college players from the United States where we didn't care much about hockey ourselves could beat the Soviet powerhouse.
