| America has gotten to the point that I hate it, I used to like the country and be patriot, but that changed. Our government is Soviet Union.. Well yeah. Any opinions on this? Also I USED to be obsessed with Russia's now I'm not, I changed a lot. I never talk about Russia or anything relating to it. I like the country and language, but I find more languages more interesting too. I'm sorry for the way I acted months ago guys. |

Our government may be corrupt but it's nowhere as bad as the USSR. Don't try to the elevate the USSR to the status of modern America.
We have rule of law, separation of powers, an independent judiciary, a high standard of living, a relatively free economy, a strong private sector, due process, freedom of speech (and after the speech), freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, etc. The Soviet Union did not have most of these. We may not be perfect but we generally adhere to these principles. And even when we mess up, it's not as bad as when the totalitarian genocidal state does it, don't you think? They do it to a much greater degree. We don't put people in gulags, arrest them for being the wrong religion, arrest them for peaceful assembly, or make them wait in long lines for basic services. Except in the DMV; I'll give you that.
Also, it's okay if you like Russia; you can talk about it if it interests you. It's just that nobody wants you to talk about it every single day. It would be like if thekentuckian only talked about Jews. |

| I can understand disliking the government, but why the country itself? They're not the same thing, you know. |

| I find it impossible to hate a country. You can dislike the government, but you can't just decide that the country sponges up because of it. You can't decide the country it bad because you met one bad person from it. |

| Yes. Lenin, Kruschev, Borat, these good communist men help Soviet Union very much. Is good time back then. No racism, is equal. |

| And if you are comparing the US to the USSR, you either know nothing about one of the two, or are a troll. |

| Your teacher sounds a bit off. Did he just skim over the whole "soviet union was a totalitarian dictatorship that repressed everyone, had its fair share of gulags, genocide, and had a pervasive secret police that enforced total conformity in the country" and just go right to saying, "America is pretty much the same thing as the USSR!" |

@alez
That's still ridiculous. Read my first post in this thread to find out why. A much better comparison would be, say, France, or the UK. More-or-less democratic Western countries with rule of law, a constitution that is actually followed, separation of powers, an independent judiciary, a mixed but capitalist-leaning economy, private property, etc. As with the US, those countries don't follow those principles perfectly and they have corrupt governments, but they more or less are committed to them. |

@OP All of your claims are entirely erroneous. The United States is nothing like the USSR. I feel like the person you're getting this information from is exaggerating, perhaps with a propagandic motive. I'm implying that he's likely a conspiracy theorist who is trying to say that the U.S. is a totalitarian regime due to the the ostensibly overreaching policies put in the place over the last decade or so (e.g. NSA, increased socialism, etc.)
If you think that the way people treat one another in America is bad, then what countries do you deem to be "acceptable"? It's not like in Syria, where you get kidnapped, tortured, and burned alive for being/not being in accord with rebelling. Or in Uganda, where one is expected to condemn gray people or be beaten senseless, with prison sentences ensuing if one fails to scorn grayness. |
