The incredibly sensitive hearing.

You know those noises which are a general nuisance?

e.g The scraping of a clothes rack against the floor or someone sliding their wet shoe against the foot of a chair.

To an Autistic person the top two examples are borderline infuriating, and are best described as "Legions of ants crawling into your ear and repeatably stabbing you in the ear drum with their poisoned-tipped ant katanas for several minutes", and even after the sound stops, it still hurts for minutes after, hence the poison-tipping of the ant-katanas.

Another thing that Autistic people generally despise is sudden loud noises. I.e a firework going off without warning or a hammer being smashed near to them.
One of my teachers (who surprisingly is not fired) decided to put this to test by walking up to a person whom he knew loathed sudden loud noises, and smashed a hammer repeatedly on a desk next to him. He then decided to mock him publically for crying. It sickens me that evil people get away with this; it is among one of the most disgusting things one can do.

So please think of this before you laugh at an Autistic person for "over-reacting" or acting in a way that may seem strange to a normal person as a result of a sound that may seem not annoying at all.

I know how it feels, but yet I really feel sorry for any person who has autism. I have autism but luckly though, I have only a small amount of it. I most just have ADHD.

@JJ:

Please, get a life and do not insult children/adults with autism. My youngest sister is autistic, and, even when I see the traits the OP mentioned within her, it is shocking to see how far along she has progressed with therapy.

Off Topic:
I am doing my senior project on autism and am creating a "newly-diagnosed survival package." If there was anything you think I should cover, it would be greatly appreciated if you tell me. I am a bit stuck for ideas and want to make sure it will give me a passing grade.

@ace
it really depends on what form of autism, and the severity of the symptoms

@Delta

I have noticed that with my research. It is a spectrum disorder, so there is not one "miracle treatment" that will work for all of those diagnosed. I am planning on putting in a few brochures explaining what autism is, main symptoms, and resources for further research. I also might put in a small packet explaining gluten-free dieting (it is one treatment option to minimize symptoms), give a few social stories examples that emphasize the necessity of routines, and explanations of the most common therapy options.

For me, I look at ASD the same way I do with my diabetes treatment. There are those in the honeymoon stage that do not need to really stress about their glucose (similar to Asperger's. I hope yins understand my analogy), and there are those that risk developing DKA within hours if they miss one insulin injection (like the most severe cases of ASD). Even the treatment options are different. Like my autistic sister benefiting from therapy, social groups, and social stories, I benefit most from restricting carbs from my diet, testing 10+ time a day, and taking more insulin than I think I need. On the other hand, some of my diabetic acquaintances benefit from increased exercise, and some of my sister's autistic friends benefit more from a gluten-free diet and therapy.

There is no cookie-cutter for ASD and treatment, and it is something I will have to put in fine print for my project. I am sure one of the teachers will point that out and dock points if I do not.
