Linux isn't widely popular, so not many machines will come with it natively.
Though you can get it for free and burn it to a disc and install it (or use it as a trial if your Linux build supports it).
MOST Linux builds are free, but not all of them are.
I use Ubuntu 8.04, but I've heard that Mint is good too. |

Basically you can divide your hard drive up to install multiple OS on a single drive. I have a very old test machine that runs Ubuntu Linux & Windows 98 SE.
So you can have your Windows and add Linux to the mix.
@Wad I only suggested it because it's something simple and easy and something I could recommend from my own experiences with it.
It reminds me a lot of Windows in some ways and I think a native Windows user could adapt to it. |

It's safe, but you have to be careful not to overwrite your existing Windows partition.
When you boot up the machine, you'll get a prompt to cycle through your partitions and to select one. It'll usually pick the default one for you if you don't press a key before the timer runs out.
(I *think* you can disable the countdown on booting a partition but I've never looked into it or messed with it.) |
