I know this is somewhat off topic to C&G, but I do have a reason I posted here, which I will cover later in the post.
Anyways, here's my dilemma. I'm currently a 9th grader, but I am going to be a 10th grader next year.
Currently, I am taking computer programming as my elective, and it covers no college requirements, so it was basically a waste of class, because the class had not much interest to me.
So instead of taking art, I took computer programming. One year of art is required from students to receive their diploma and graduate.
I want to double up in math next year, because I want to have the chance to take Calculus as a senior. That would mean taking Geometry and Advanced Algebra at the same time. My teacher recommends I do double up.
That would mean I would have to take my art elective as a 11th grader, with all the 9th graders. It would be pretty embarrassing.
TL;DR = Educational Benefits over Embarrassment by being the oldest in a class?
Why post to C&G? I feel like in the forums, I can get the best answers from older users here in C&G, and many of you guys are from America, and can possibly relate.
Thanks so much if you help in any way. OT: I need good HRs in VN, send me a message if interested. |

does your school require financial tech?
If so, get that out of the way, then do a fine arts for one year, aka like intro to art workshop or some crap
get all your required courses out of the way so your junior and senior year are free for what you want

You guys aren't really helping me. What I did wrong this year as a 9th grader, I didn't get my fine art requirement out of the way, so now I have to close doors to doubling up, or just take fine art as an upperclassmen, which will look so damn weird. |

| If you're biggest problem is being in a class with people two years younger than yourself, you really don't have any problems |

Look into concert band. Colleges will take a band kid over an art kid.
Band will give you so many great memories, and if you dedicate, it'll be one of the best decisions you'll ever make.
If you want to get more room, take Geometry online (ask councillor). Geometry is REALLY easy. |

I say double up now. I have lots of friends in alg2 and geom and they do fine
depends on how chill or annoying the 7th graders are. |

I talked to my counselor today about the topic, she said it's all up to me. She said it was unusual for kids to take their fine art as a upperclassmen, but it doesn't make it bad.
I played Alto, Tenor, and Barrie saxophone in middle school for three years, and I didn't really enjoy it. I feel like I'm a more creative person with art.
I still have my Alto-Saxophone. ;) |

I'm going to see if graphic design is counted as an art (it should) I'll take that. |

some classes like that can count for either fine arts or career technical so they are good

| I'm in 11th grade and I'm taking an art class that mostly consists of grade 9 and 10, but there are also some other juniors and a senior and I haven't really had a problem with it. You just get to be older and cooler lol |

Okay, well i'm not american so I'm not really sure how the school works, but I finished school so this is my verdict.
Your educational well being should come first as that's a whole life thing rather than just, I don't know how long the embarrassment would go on for.
Also, surely because of your dilemmas you will have support even though you'll be doing it with younger kids.
Hope my 2 cents worth was constructive. |

I will probably be taller than most of the 9th graders when I'm an 11th grader, so if they see it funny that I'm in art, they are going to have some trouble. *Cracks knuckles* |

Also, make sure you're not there just to mess around.
To be honest, focus solely on getting the job done, so no cracking knuckles, okay? |

I talked to my mother, and she has a point.
I don't feel that motivated to take two math courses at the same time. I heard that you really have to be motivated to do this. I just want the opportunity to take Calculus. If I doubled up, I could only take electives for other classes as a senior.
Doubling up would open up math doors, but close all other course doors. And, I want to work in government, so I don't know if I really have to be that knowledged in math.
I will most probably take Calculus as a freshman in college. |
