Everyone has probably heard of this statement, but what do you think about it.
I consider it untrue and unjustifiable. Why is it good for other people to be happy, but not me? |

| I for one find joy in knowing I make/made someone happy. I think it's true. |

| Your argument is keeping your own happiness alive rather then other people's happiness alive. However you failed to recognize the point of the statement being that when you fulfill other people's happiness it then makes you happy. If your argument was questioning why this is, then you have a point. If not, the whole statement flew over your head. |

| My point is when ever I fulfill the happiness of others, which is ultimately at the expense of myself, I feel cheated and taken advantage of. The whole statement itself is based on an altruistic morality. |

| In that case your questioning the functionality of the statement, your argument is a valid approach. |

| If it involves you giving something pathetic to someone, I wouldn't feel satisfaction even if they were happy. |

| The primary importance should be your own happiness. But if something you do happens to make other people happy, that's great. |

Such an objectivist...
I think it depends on the person. What makes me happy is being rich and owning stuff. Others may find happiness through helping people. |

Can we please stop with this kind of trash? "Heh....happiness...who needs it?" "Har har har! Look at those silly moral leftists ranting about GREED and INEQUALITY! Har har har!" "Look at those silly buffoons who talk about MORALITY!"
I'm beginning to feel like I'm talking to Ebenezer Scrooge. |

Can we please stop with this kind of trash? ------------ This is not trash. It is in fact truth. This statement may make some people happy but others just care about money and I am one of them. |

What? Happiness doesn't just come from giving someone money. I make other people happy by being friendly to them, encouraging them, or just giving a lonely guy some company. If you think you can only make people happy by giving them free stuff, I'm sorry, you need some reality thrown at you. Happiness does not neccesarily equate with giving money/possessions. Quit being a darn cynic and lighten up. Yes, the world is ruled by money and possessions, but that doesn't mean you should spend your time acting like Scrooge. |

Yes, the world is ruled by money and possessions, but that doesn't mean you should spend your time acting like Scrooge. ------------------------------------------------------------------ First of all I said owning things makes me happy and I don't care for making others happy. Me and you're different in that aspect. I never said I would never help the poor and I would by helping fund charities that give them job skills. That doesn't make me happy that just allows me to help the community as a whole and why I would do such a thing.
I never said that giving people stuff is the only way to make people happy, stop throwing words into my mouth. I said some people may get happy from making others it but there are others who don't. This is the truth. Not everybody is like you nor me. I just realize happiness can come from different sources varying on the person unlike you.
I never said it did. I said for myself it does. I never stated people were only motivated by money. Many people including myself are motivated by the want to be the best at whatever they're doing. I just stated money and goods make me happy. You disagree? Good for you you're allowed to be happy with whatever it is that makes you happy. As for me I take a greenback - that I worked for as my happiness. |

No problem? Saying this, "Agreed, being rich and owning stuff is my happiness as well." and this, " This statement may make some people happy but others just care about money and I am one of them." Kind of implied that giving money, no matter if it was towards a charity or a homeless person was something you do not do.

I'm sorry about that, but when I responded with my post, you said this,
"others just care about money"
If you know that happiness comes in different sources, why start talking about money? |

If you know that happiness comes in different sources, why start talking about money? --------------------- Because, one it makes me happy and two you stated this thread was a load of crap despite not realizing people may not find happiness from this.
I'm sorry about that, but when I responded with my post, you said this, "others just care about money" --------------------- I should have elaborated that there are more sources of happiness than these two. As this was an incredibly broad generalization. But, it is true others do just care about money. May not be their only motivation but I digress.

Saying this, "Agreed, being rich and owning stuff is my happiness as well." and this, Kind of implied that giving money, no matter if it was towards a charity or a homeless person was something you do not do. ------------ It implied that money makes me happy. It didn't imply that I was stingy or so ultra-conservative that I wouldn't help somebody out in some way. It just wouldn't effect me in anyway.
