Not from the world wars per say, but from the middle ages up to the discovery of America. How on earth do they know such specifics about the society, wars, important people, etc?

they didn't exactly have large databases hundreds of years ago
We would need to read tons and tons of old literature that has probably degraded over time in order to understand medieval life or events, and most of that literature would be lost over the years. |

You'd be surprised how much ancient literature has survived to modern times.
Ancient stuff was made to last. If stuff was written down, it would likely last a very long time unless it was intentionally destroyed. That's how we know so much about the Greek and Roman cultures, their literature. |
