everyone has their own favorite, let me see if I can break it down for you...
Pretty Hate Machine - first album, a favorite amongst longtime fans. very electronic with more of a pop-song structure.
Broken - NIN's next release was this EP, containing 6 songs plus 2 instrumentals. It's their heaviest and most guitar-driven music, and they won a grammy for the song wish.
The Downward Spiral - this is easily their most commercially successful album, even though it's very dark and pretty heavy. Songs like Closer, Hurt, March Of The Pigs, and Mr. Self Destruct are classic industrial anthems. a favorite of mine.
The Fragile - similar to The Fragile, except that it leans more towards sad than it does angry. We're In This Together, Into The Void, The Day The World Went Away, and Star*uckers Inc. were the most popular songs on here. amazing album imo. but I'd go with Machine or Spiral first.
With Teeth - an excellent album, though there wasn't much new going on here.
Year Zero - very different, very electronic, very strange. i wasn't a huge fan of this one, but it definitely has its moments.
Ghosts I-IV - a double album of instrumental music. it's brilliant, but for diehard fans only.
The Slip - kind of a follow-up to Year Zero. probably their least impressive work.

| and then when you've listened to all of their studio albums, hit up stuff like further down the spiral or and all that could have been. |
