There was a debate in my IT class about whether closed source, or open source, is better. Despite Windows probably being one of the worst operating systems in existence(seriously, Windows 8? The OS that is slower, less intuitive, and has more bugs than its predecessor? Despite this though, I still use Windows for compatibility), I think a mix of the two is the best way to go.
Apple users argue(usually) that closed source is better because virus creators can't create viruses without source code(despite Macs getting viruses anyway, albeit not as close to the number of viruses that a PC can get), and Linux users argue(usually) that open source is better because it's easy to pinpoint viruses(since everything has to be open source), and on top of that, users can customize the OS to their liking. Linux seems like the better option here(there are less viruses for any given distro of Linux than there are for iOS, and you can customize the OS to your liking), but no one pays attention to why Linux has been lagging behind the other operating systems -- the fact that Linux is open source. Because Linux is open source, companies reinvent the wheel over, and over, and over again. Linux is lagging behind because there are too many companies working on different distros of Linux. I mean, come on -- Linux Mint is just a modified version of Ubuntu, yet it's still distributed under a different name.
A mix of closed source and open source would be the best option -- give people enough power that they can tweak the OS to their liking, but just slightly less than enough to allow them to go and recreate the OS.
However, what are your opinions? |

I do not understand your opinion for open and close is analogous to a bool value, it's either 1 or the other, there's nothing in between.

@Android: It's perfectly logical. I'll reference ROBLOX so you can understand it better.
Example:
I give you a script from one of my games. Are you able to recreate every script in the game from the script I gave you?
Here's another example:
Say I have some crappy admin commands that happen to have a kick script. Say I was a noob and used player:Destroy in the commands. You want to change that to player:Kick(), so you go into my place, and you chat a command :edit kick. That brings up a scripting window that allows you to edit only what is inside the kick command. That is a mixture of open source/closed source because I am giving you the source of the kick script, which you can then go and change, but not the rest of the script. |

| I'm agreeing with Echo here. A mixture would probably be the best option. Leave off the things that SHOULD never be changed while keeping the modifying ability for other parts. |

| The reason why there are less viruses for Macs is because not as many people own them. |

So, closed source with plugins?
Yes, that is a good idea. Good enough to be common practice.
Open source with plugin support is even better though, I think. Open source projects pretty much have unending potential to improve. |

| Windows 8 is stupid. Its a tablet/phone OS, not a PC OS (Unless you have a touchscreen and, for some bizarre reason, no mouse) |

How is it a 'phone OS'???
I used it for my desktop and it was great.
Maybe it feels nicer if you have a touchscreen, but that doesn't mean omg it's a phone OS and you can't use it for a PC... |

^ Indeed, besides, they're all judging from the Start Menu. Remove the Start Menu, add the old Start Menu; you get W7 with better performance. Also, if such a little change would make W8 a phone OS, does that mean W7 is a phone OS too?

| If they removed all of the touchscreen designed features from Windows 8 and put the Windows 7 equivalent there, what's the difference? |

Have you even used Windows 8?
It's wayyyyyyyyyyy smoother. In Windows 8, the startup is quick and once I'm logged in it's maybe 3 or 4 seconds before I can do stuff.
In Windows 7, it takes like 2 minutes to start up, plus another 2 minutes for it to actually start working once I'm signed in. |

Notunknown99, funnily, such a statement also proves that W8 shouldn't be considered as a phone OS, otherwise, W7 would also be a phone OS.

@Android One of the most hated features about Windows 8 is the loss of the Start Button at the bottom left. That was better than the search now. |

It's back in 8.1........
Also in 8.1 you can set to boot to the desktop instead of start screen. |

I do not care about startup. I have used Windows 8, and found that I simply did not feel as happy with it as Windows 7. Pressing the (Start? Home? Windows?) button brings up this stupid bulky screen that serves no purpose other than to obscure your desktop (Although, honestly, if THAT was the desktop I would be happy with Windows 8)
@Android: How does the fact that the non-touchscreen equivalent features of Windows 7 prove that its a mobile OS? |

If I had it my way, I would get rid of the desktop completely and just have the Windows 8 start screen

@Not, because you're simply removing one feature, which by the way, is also supported in W7.
