| Start up a server first, then you can start the player. The option is right by the start player option. |

Exactly.
The Start Player button in Studio starts a new instance that is searching for a server hosted locally on your computer. You need to start the server, THEN start the players.
As of yet, I am unsure as to whether or not you can start a server on one computer, and have other computers on your local area network connect to it, but it definitely works when everything is on the same machine. |

| I'd infer that Roblox made it so that multiple computers can join if connected to the same network. If that wasn't the case then why even have the server? |

Just tested, and two computers on the same network won't connect with one running server. There might be some hidden way, but it's not that easy.
