Some bands had to be cut. That's just how it works.
Without further ado.
11. Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Holy $%@#, I know this relatively recent band to list, and I only discovered this band recently. But their mastery of both studio technology and instrument improvisation have made them the experimental band for the decades.
10. Bob Marley & The Wailers
Let's get together and feel alright. And what mellow music to feel alright too. And I know responses below will make comments about the drug aspect of his songs and I say just stop. Love the message of peace and harmony that Bobby promotes and feel the world tunes that we would never know if it weren't for Marles.
9. Nine Inch Nails
Bow down before the ones you serve. And serve us they did. With their latest album being rated #19 on Rolling Stone's 50 Greatest of 2013, Nine Inch Nails are proving more fertile for growth than ever. The group's debut in 1989 was aptly dubbed appropriately as "A Remix of Metal Machine Music" based off a dream of Trent Reznor's. They've stunned us with their originality and have kept us gripped since their '94 masterpiece "The Downward Spiral"
8. The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Have you ever been experienced? God can this music melt your brain! It almost marvels you that people actually NEED drugs compared to what this music does to you. Arguably the greatest guitar player of the 20th century, Jimi Hendrix brings the hard, psychedelic sound back down to the good ol' blues roots. And speaking of that psychedelic sound...
7. Pink Floyd
And after all, we're only ordinary men. Not Pink Floyd. These gods among us mere mortals followed the psychedelic scene since "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" and went on to define it with the holy six album streak (Meddle, Obscured By Clouds (<3 Favorite), Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall). Everywhere they went, they pioneered. From laser shows at concerts to songs lasting 20 minutes, Pink Floyd was a force to be reckoned with.
6. The Clash
The shareef don't like it. But hell knows I do. The Clash might be single-handedly responsible for making punk the everyman's genre. With their clever blend of ska, reggae, and even rap which they perfected on "London Calling" and their world music "Sandinista!". The Clash were masters of the rambling album, the classic radio jam, and the thoughtful political aspects. Three aspects once thought to be separate within the punk world. If you don't get the gist of it now, I'll spell it out for you: T-H-E C-L-A-S-H A-R-E T-H-E G-R-E-A-T-E-S-T P-U-N-K B-A-N-D E-V-E-R. Indisputibly.
5. The Doors
Are you a lucky little lady in the city of light? Lucky little ladies we were that we had Jim Morrison for however short a time. Often viewed by the average listener as a blue-rooted band singing their soft cool ballads, and viewed by the music scholars as the protopunk powerhouse of sixties, the Doors ahad a place in History for their perfect balance of Velvet-esque variety and Kink-Esque knowing your place.
4. U2
Even better than the real thing, U2 has come to define Pre-Britpop, Britpop, and Post-Britpop (despite actually hailing from Ireland!). The masters first caught our attention with "The Unforgettable Fire" and "War" and cemented their place in history with "The Joshua Tree". They continued dealing masterpieces (Achtung Baby, All That You Can't Leave Behind) like it was nobody's business. From experimental alternative sounds to classic stadium jams, U2 has a song for everyone.
3. Radiohead
You're so #&$%in' special. I wish I were special. And I do. I would give an arm to talk to Thom for five minutes (okay maybe not an arm, but an appendix or pinky or some other useless part). If Radiohead had stopped at OK Computer, they would still have a place on this list somewhere, but Kid A, Amnesiac, and In Rainbows have proven them to be the best alternative band of the 21st century and the second greatest of all time (we'll get to that next).
2. The Velvet Underground
And one fine mornin' she turns on a New York station, she don't believe what she heard at all. Whether it practically inventing genres with "...& Nico" (Alternative) and "White Light/White Heat" (Noise Rock), or spicing up the traditional songs with "Velvet Underground (3rd Album) and "Loaded", The Velvets would change the way we pick up guitars and 12"s forever, and would've snagged the #1 spot if it weren't for those round-headed, adorables we now know as:
1. The Beatles
And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make. What can I say That's not rhetorical, what CAN I say? That they sprang to popularity overnight? That they spun a brand new sound over old classics? That they pioneered the psychedelic scene of the 60's? That they spread their influence over hard rock forever during their White Album/Abbey Road stage? These four guys from Liverpool deserve every ounce of popularity they receive, and it can be seen in Sgt. Pepper's, and in Revolver, and in Abbey Road, and in The White Album, and in Rubber Soul, and in... |

It's also popular belief that these bands are some of the greatest of all time |

EVERYTHING WRONG WITH THIS LIST
1. Top 11? what.
2. Basically all of those bands being better than NIN, not saying they should be #1 but what.
3. The Beatles being #1.
4. Thinking NIN is a group
5. Calling Pink Floyd or any musical artist unsatirically gods amongst men
6. The Beatles being #1. |
