Ever since I've heard of this "Private" Server thing being a possibility on the Roblox Blog, it has given me hope for making an ACTUAL RPG here on Roblox. This cool feature does not have to be for a RPG, but this is something that I know is near and dear to my heart. Also, this could benefit others too, so please hear my explanation in its entirety; for what it's worth you will gain some ideas yourselves.
[[Your TL;DR SUMMARY]] (Read more please? :D)
I am not sure if this is a common thing in RPG's or just in games like World of Warcraft and RIFT, but I would LOVE to somehow be able to apply this "Private" Server feature to be able to make group specific "Dungeons" and Battle Grounds with two opposing groups for my RPG.
[The Per Group Server]
-Basically how this would work is, a group of 1-5 people (Or whatever amount of people) enter a "portal" to a dungeon (Just like in World of Warcraft).
-Since this is a per group Server for people to join (Not all 1000 people from around the whole “Universe”), OTHER groups will not alter what happens within your group server.
-This Per Group Server is simply a temporary place to play relatively short levels, complete objectives OR obtain certain items, which can be entered as many times as players are allowed [by scripters], if they want to experience that “content” again.
[Now what about the PvP side?](Almost done reading!)
-So we all understand the concept of this idea now, right? To be able to TEMPORARILY enter a special server for the purpose of not being there the whole entire time… to complete a CERTAIN task.
-Now I am wondering, what can be done about the PvP end of this? If you have a fighting game you might want to be able to send two opposing groups to one server to complete some sort of battle objectives or something.
-This is just as easy for Roblox to add. It is just another one of those Temporary "Private" Servers... But this is a server that will send in more than one group for the purpose of fighting each other.
[[DISCLAIMERS]]
1.) I understand that this may seem possible to make now or even after the Universe update… but the truth is that this is NOT already possible.
2.) A special API for us scripters is needed to let us designate groups as one whole “entity”. Also, scripters should be able to fully customize the aesthetics, usages and techniques of groups.(Do players invite each other or is it an automatic system?)
3.) I personally feel that the website party system should NOT relate to these groups to allow fairness for game creators and their creations to feel more "Standalone". |

Maybe 6 people since that's the minimum for servers to have. And Support. |

| Yes, but keep in mind that the Admins claim that games will have 1-1000 people one day. That is based from the possibility that Roblox might include other things in the Future. |

Actually, once the Universe and Data Store APIs are released, all of this will be completely possible. It's a great idea, but it's one that any scripter with enough skill could fulfill on their own.

| Yeah but the universe is equivalent to a few game servers where a bunch of people will meet each other again as one big dedicated server... the thing I am talking about is the PRIVATE SERVER SYSTEM that Roblox said they would add one day. I am sorry electric you are defiantly wrong this time because you can't make INGAME GROUPS that can go to micro-servers... |

Sure you can. If you devote certain games within the universe to these private servers and have them kick any player on their entrance if they are not identified as having "reached the dungeon" (done using interconnected data persistence which will soon be released). That's the whole point of the upcoming universes--to transmit data between servers, and between games.

But how do you do that when it works like this?:
Server { Universe 1 Universe 2 Universe 3 Universe 4 }
That's just how I organized the universes in the game.
Now, let's say in this server, you have 1,000 people moving between the different universes, and universe 4 is your dungeon. You want to bring a party of let's say ten members into this dungeon to go fight the boss. That's great. They can enter.
These ten people have now entered universe 4, and are on there way to fight the boss. Meanwhile, a group of 7 people are teaming up and ready to go fight the boss. They attempt to enter the fourth universe, but are now kicked due to a party already working their way through the dungeon.
How do you work around this? |

I'm sorry, but I'm afraid your terminology is confused.
Universe { Game 1 { Server 1 Server 2 Server 3 } Game 2 { Server 1 Server 2 Server 3 } Game 3 { Server 1 Server 2 Server 3 } }
The universe is the entire network, or the entire RPG per se. Each game is each section of the RPG. These "private servers" would simply be individual games within the universe. When a player enters those games, the game would use the data storage API to determine whether or not the player was sent there along with their group from the other game in the universe. If not, they would be kicked immediately, preserving the group within the game.

That's exactly how the universes work. You're right, I did get it wrong, but yours wasn't really right either.
Universe ---Server ------Place 1 ------Place 2 ------Place 3 ---Server ------Place 1 ------Place 2 ------Place 3
With that, how would you make it so that in this server where players move through the different places in the universe, you can have certain parties enter a place in their own private 'server', without preventing others from entering? |

Actually, that makes it even more plausible as it saves the owner from worrying about multiple instances of the same section of the RPG running at the same time.
Picture this:
Lobby is the section where every player starts out. That's where they are introduced, and that's where they begin to play.
They are then teleported to Zoom (random name), where they continue to play in a new map. A group of 5 within Zoom gather together and decide they want to fight a dungeon together.
Using a GUI interface within Zoom, the group of 5 teleports to D1 (Dungeon1), another game within the universe. Here is where they fight the dungeon. As soon as they are teleported to D1, the game will check if there is already a group there. If there is, it will teleport the group to D2. Same thing there, teleports them to D3. The cycle will continue until they find an unused dungeon level. If anyone tries to enter while they're there, they will be kicked. If a group ends up there, they'll be immediately teleported to their own level.
A foolproof automated system.

| But with this one single server that holds only one of that level (dungeon), how do you get two different groups in two different servers? |

| This is why I say Roblox needs to add this... they could let you pre-design a level an let you set that as certain type of "Private" server and that way it will always give a unique dungeon to a unique group. |

You might want to read my last post again. There would be several games containing dungeons and the cycle process I described earlier ensuring that each group is in their own server.
And there really isn't anything missing. Why should ROBLOX waste so much time and energy to create something we'll be able to do on our own? You obviously see a predicament, but I see a challenge. This is where real creativity comes into play. |
