It's not me narrating. heheh
__________________________________ CHAPTER 1 __________________________________ I should've known that something would happen that day. I probably did and just ignored the feeling. We hadn't had any business all week. It was a wonder that we hadn't been closed down. My intern, Swift, and I were the only ones in the building. Everyone else had gone home. Swift was still holding out in hope that some beautiful woman would show up at the door. I could hear the incessant drumming of his fingernails on his desk from a room away.
I heard a ringing in my ears. I froze, unsure if I had actually heard it or not. Swift poked his head through the doorway. "You expecting someone?" I scowled and stood up from my chair. "Get lost." I answered, knowing fully well that he'd do no such thing. I walked to the front door and exhaled before opening the door. "Why hello there." Swift said from behind me. Swift had finally gotten what he was wanting; there was a woman standing at our doorstep. Her long blond hair curled around her ivory face, making her green eyes look even greener. An emerald hat was perched over her head, casting a black veil over her. "What's wrong? Is your face stuck like that?" She asked, pursing her lips slightly. I forced myself to smile. "No, of course not. Who are you?" "Does it really matter who I am? You don't seem to be busy." She said, a smile forming at the corner of her mouth. "Even if we were, I'm sure we'd make time for you." Swift cooed with a wink. I silently cursed. Sometimes I wished that boy would just shut his mouth. "You look familiar, been in the papers lately?" I said. The woman stepped inside the building and surveyed the room like she was appraising it. "Nice place. Haven't been here since it was an overpriced Laundromat." I coughed in surprise, pretending to clear my throat. "You didn't answer my question." She smiled, probably giving Swift a mini-siezure. "Me? My friends call me Capri." "Does that make us your friends?" Swift asked. "Depends." The smile disappeared from her face. "There's been a theft at my father's house. Thought you could help." She dropped a folder in my hands before walking out the door. "My number's in there, if you decide this is worth your time." She disappeared down the street, holding her hat onto her head with one hand. "We are helping her, right?" Swift asked. "Depends," was all I said. "Depends on what?" I walked back to my office, Swift right on my heels. "Depends on the case." Swift stopped at the door to my office. "Come on, Leslie. We haven't had any business in weeks, we have to—" I closed the door in his face.
I had a bad feeling about it. I should've reacted to that feeling when I had the chance.

_________________________ CHAPTER TWO _________________________
If you would've asked me how I ended up standing in front of Capri's house, with Swift beside me, I wouldn't have been able to tell you. Maybe it was the desperation for a real case, maybe it was for the money, maybe it was just to humor Swift. Even looking back, I can't justify my thought process. "What are we waiting for?" Swift started to walk toward the front door. I grabbed the collar of his shirt to stop him. He let out a strangled cry. "What the ___ was that for?" I let him go and walked up the steps. The front door was large, oak, I'd guess, with bronze doorknockers. It was a little too ostentatious for my taste. I ignored the doorknockers and rang the doorbell. I could hear it ringing inside the house, but other than that, silence. Swift reached up to ring the doorbell again. I almost stopped him. Maybe it was one last thought that we shouldn't be there. The door swung open as soon as Swift rang it a second time. There was a man standing at the door with an obvious resemblance to Capri. He glanced between Swift and me. He finally settled his gaze on Swift and nodded slightly. "A little eager there, aren't you." I interrupted any chance of a response that Swift could give. "I'm Leslie. This is Swift. We're from MTVB Inc. Your daughter, Capri, came to see us about a recent theft." A flash of what almost seemed like anger – or it may have been annoyance- passed over the man's face. "Right...." He said and opened the door a little wider. "Sorry. My name is Lego." I stepped inside, glancing down at the floor. The wood panels around the doormat were worn, as if one too many pieces of furniture had been carried through these doors. "Sir?" I heard Lego ask, probably for the third time in a row. I blinked and looked back up at Lego. His eye twitched. "Sorry," I muttered. "Must've zoned out for a minute." I cleared my throat. "Anyway. Was there any sign of a break-in?" I asked, silently hoping that this wasn't a case of someone mislaying something under a couch. Lego spun on his heels. "Yes. Yes. Right this way." I followed him up the stairs. When we got to the second landing, I paused. "Swift." I snapped. He was still standing on the doormat, probably waiting for a sign of Capri. He slowly looked up at me, smiling sheepishly. "Right. Coming." Lego stopped at the last door in the hall. It was darker than the rest of the doors. I studied it. Solid oak, like the front door. Lego pulled a key ring out of his pocket and unlocked the door. "Do you have a key for every room on there?" Swift asked, peering at the keys. Lego ignored him and opened the door.
