Five score years is 100. Abraham Lincoln died in the 1860s on April 14th, a Friday, almost seven scores ago. It's hilarious how I know the Month, date, day of the week, and even time (7:15, when the audience at Ford's Theater burst out with laughter at a line in Our American Cousin) as well as which theater he was shot at, the name of the play, and that it was celebrity actor Laura Keene's 1,00th performance. Also, Ulysses S. Grant was lucky not to be in attendance, and John Wilkes Booth shattered his fibia jumping out of the State Box after getting caught on the thick American flag covering it as he yelled "Sic semper tyrannis" (Thus always to tyrants)and escaped into an alley as a young doctor attempted to perform an autopsy. Yet I don't know whether it was 1864 or 1865. |
