Explain more about the "horror movies" you made in high school?
As an aspiring filmmaker and horror fan you've caught my interest. Even if they were just home movies I'm still interested. |

I suppose like a lot of kids I was inspired by the movies I watched as a kid. A lot of those films included the old Universal Monster movies like Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolfman. When I was younger my friends used to make our own "faux-classic" black and white films with an old super 8 camera. That is how I got into practical effects and costuming.
We used to construct these super elaborate outfits and puppets to use in these short films we would make for fun. They doubled as great props for Halloween too when we would set up a huge Haunted House for the neighborhood kids as we outgrew trick or treating. |

That sounds pretty cool.
Do you have any tips or pointers you could give me? |

Advice...always block out scenes before you shoot them. Have a plan, not just a script. You would be surprised how much help a story board can be, it's simple stuff you might want to skip because you get excited about filming but don't.
I am sure some of my friends still have copies of them somewhere, my parents might as well. I remember one of them we shot was about a scare crow coming to life and terrorizing our little town. I think another one we had a kid who got picked on at school make a robot to befriend and it went wild and tore our school apart.
Lots of silly stuff like that. |

You would be surprised what you can get away with under the guise of "extra credit student film". We even had our security guards and our principal as extras. Our head security guy "Mike" was built like a pro-wrestler and we had him suplex the Scarecrow to death.
Except it wasn't really dead...cus...y'know cheesy horror movie ending. |
