CHAPTER ONE

"Well, here we are on another camping trip into the middle of the mountainous southern Pennsylvanian woods.", said Sam. "I simply hope that the weather cooperates. Last time we didn't have a lot of luck, and it rained for two days straight."

"Yeah. I remember that.", said Mike, who had been dragged along onto this camping trip against his wishes. He did enjoy camping, but going on trips with his friend Sam to the exact same campsite over and over again sure got boring. "I just hope that we can get this over with in a night so I can return home into my warm, comfy bed and just watch the Steelers make the playoffs."

The duo made their way down the potholed-littered roads near the Maryland border, until they found their "secret" camping site, which was a simple abandoned house near the old coal-mining town of Bedford. "We're here!", said Sam, filled with elation.

"I'm still extremely shocked that you're in such an elated mood during every single trip to this place. I frankly find it quite repetitive and bland, to be precise.", said Mike.

"Come on!", said Sam, sounding a bit angry as a result. "I just like this spot. Stop complaining and enjoy what you can!"

"All right.", said Mike, with a slightly sarcastic tone. "I'll settle in with you."

So the two settled into their hut for the next few days, readying themselves for many outdoor activities. But little did they know, that down in the city of Cumberland, danger was brewing...

CHAPTER TWO

"Sir, we have ten incoming Serenas! They're all around me! AAGH-"
The radio signal then went blank.

The city of Cumberland, Maryland was an old, decaying place, full of shuttered houses and decaying workplaces. The place had been gradually declining since the 1960s, when OSHA had made coal-mining regulations, which was the economic mainstay of the town, a lot stricter, causing many people to leave. And this new wave of mysterious events, involving humanoid "Serenas", weren't helping.

The story behind the Serenas had started not that long ago. In fact, they had started in the year 2013, when Nintendo, seeking to test-market their new Pokemon game for American release in this small town. However, for some reason that is simply made up for the sake of this story's plot, the cartridges given as part of the test made anyone who had played with them into a real-life version of Serena from the games.

At first, this did not seem to be that big of a threat, as they were too focused with trying to find Pokemon in this world. Eventually, however, reality caught up with them, causing them to go mad. Due to their new awareness that they were fictional and could warp reality to an extent, the Serenas gave themselves the power to turn all of those they touched into Serenas themselves.

This went unnoticed by people outside the city, though, as almost every American never pays attention to Maryland outside of what happens in Baltimore sports. And the people who DID end up traveling through Cumberland almost always just used Interstate 68 to get out as soon as possible, as this was an area to travel through, not to travel IN, due to a chronic lack of interesting sights and activities.

As such, the city of Cumberland was facing a crisis it had never seem before. Within a year, the population had dropped from a decent-sized 30,000 to 5,000. People couldn't flee, as they Serenas could successfully catch anyone who did. And this incident remained unnoticed even in the surrounding countryside.

But things did seem to be going from bad to worse recently. The Serenas, who had not left the city limits in all of their time on Earth, were becoming more numerous. In fact, it would only be a matter of time before-

"Mr. Mayor! We just got word that a Serena has left the city!"
"What do you mean by that?!?!?!"
"A SERENA HAS LEFT THE CITY!"
"Well, where did it go"
"It headed north, down Route 220, towards Bedford. It's probably in Pennsylvania by now, so there's nothing we can do about it!"
"OK then! We must send a warning to the Harrisb-"

Suddenly, a swarm of 45 or so Serenas entered the Mayor's office. Unable to fight them off, they, too were assimilated. Cumberland's fate was sealed, but what about that Serena that was now in Pennsylvania?

It was headed towards an seemingly abandoned hut, in the woods near the state line, where two people went on camping trips together.

CHAPTER THREE

"Man, today was so fun! We did lots of hiking throughout the mountainous forest, seeing many wild animals as a result!", Sam said.

"Sam, I understand that you like this particular spot for our camping trips, but I just want to try to go somewhere else next time. This same spot is getting more and more boring every single day.", responded Mike.

Mike knew that Sam was a smart guy, but with many quirks. He was a geek to an extent, spending hours on the Internet without any breaks. However, when he WASN'T online, he was quite eccentric, as he had a love for the outdoors, something that rarely goes hand-in-hand with being stuck in front of a computer screen all day.

However, on the other hand, Sam tended to refuse trying something new most of the time. When he found himself a place he liked, whether it be a town in an online MMO or this hut on his camping trips, he would refuse to relocate himself unless a massive calamity struck.

"Mike, I know you dislike me at times for being as stubborn as a mule, and I understand. How about we try to make this camping trip more lively? For example, how about we pretend there's a zombie apocalypse out there and we're trapped here until we either die or the army comes?"

Mike thought that was bonkers. He didn't particularly like zombie-centered fiction, but then again, he didn't particularly like this camping trip either. "All right.", Mike responded. "I'll play along with that. After all, it's not like this camping trip could get any more uninteresting."

Mike was right. It would get a lot more interesting from here on out, but not in a way he could imagine...

...Why are they in Pennsylvania in the first place?
Only Pittsburgh and Philadelphia matter.
The good news is that if this were real, I'd have a lot of time to escape, since I'm not near the northeast. It'll give me time to go to Guam or Hawaii or something.

CHAPTER FOUR

After dark, Mike sat down on a lawn chair that he had brought along with him on the trip. He simply waited, staring at the wall, while Sam worked tirelessly on some sort of paper.

"Yes! I'm finally done!", screamed Sam excitedly. "I have completed this task, which will be quite important in the coming days."

"Is it some sort of code of conduct to survive the zombie apocalypse?", asked Mike, in a relatively flat tone.

"Yes it is, my good friend. Now, read it. It shall possibly stave off your boredom for about 5 or so minutes."

Sam passed the paper to Mike, who then began to read the paper, which was worded in the following manner:

RULES OF THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE
1. Don't call them zombies. Call them "zeds", "the undead" or something similar. Never zombies.
2. Always shoot a zombie in the head twice if using a firearm.
3. If your love interest has survived the zombie apocalypse with you, she will likely be the first to die.
4. Pretend that help may never come. Try to survive for as long as you can on your own.
5. Always have your entire group together. Splitting up will invariably cause one side of the team to get lost and die.
6. Your weapon will stop working at the worst possible time. Keep this fact in mind, and never overlook using your limbs in such a situation.
7. You will likely die, even if you follow all of these rules.

"Wow. That last rule was so full of hope and happiness.", said Mike, in quite an odd, sarcastic tone. "After all, the last thing you need in the zombie apocalypse
is to know that you will not live, no matter how hard you try."

"I'm just trying to be realistic!", responded Sam defensively. "After all, the world is no utopia, zombies or not. In reality, the entire universe makes Detroit
look like Shangri-La."

Just then, outside, a shadow of a young, human-like girl quickly ran past the window. The two boys didn't notice it, but they will soon...

CHAPTER FIVE
"Well, what supplies do we have as of now?", asked Mike in a quizzing tone of voice.
"Currently, we have two weeks' worth of food, enough water to last a month, outdoor gear from L.L. Bean, plenty of clothes, flashlights and batteries, a cellular phone, a hatchet, a rifle with the name "Zapp Rowsdower" etched into it, ten rounds of ammo and a ticket stub from Kennywood.", replied Sam.

"That's quite good and useful. Except for the ticket stub, of course. That is simply a waste of ten to twelve square inches."

"No. It isn't a waste. In the zombie apocalypse, NOTHING can be wasted. Not even your biggest rival. Everything is important."

"I guess you're right. After all, it isn't if the ticket stub was never used for anything."

Suddenly, a loud knock was heard, radiating from the front door, into the back of the residence, where the two boys were.

"What in this great big world was that?", asked Mike, seeming a bit stunned that someone would come off this far the beaten path, pretend zombie apocalypse or not.

"It's probably a zombie, or the former landowner as a zombie. Just don't open the door, and you may be alright.", replied Sam.

"MAY be alright? As in there's a good chance that I'll become part of the horde even IF I don't open this door?"

"You are correct. There is never a purely safe place in the zombie apocalypse."

So the duo waited for a couple of minutes. Then, suddenly...
