In a lot of ways, Russia continues to carry the legacies of the Soviet Union. For example, Putin declared the new Russian national anthem to be the melody from Soviet times. He has reinstated military parades. Putin makes use of nationalism and patriotism and supports dictatorships like Syria and China. He uses anti-Western rhetoric a lot and uses it as justification for his authoritarian order of the day. Putin has a heavy cult of personality.
You could argue his United Russia party is the new Communist Party, because there is no opposition except from the even further-left communist party and the ultranationalist LDPR. The elections are rigged by Putin's henchmen and the opposition is harassed frequently. According to Freedom House, out of the options Partially Free, Not Free, and Free, russia is ranked Not Free.
The state still controls a lot of the economy, like Gazprom, and a lot of the media is someway or another supervised by the state. |

"I thought it was called Russia but that's just me."
Politically, no, just like North Korea is politically called the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, even though it's not democratic, the people's, or a republic. |
