I have a idea of this grand fortress/stronghold.
But you won't get it, because it's mine.

On a serious note:
What kind of ideas are you looking for?
. Structure? . General features? . Winning mechanics? |

Ok then, as you won't be specific as to a general theme, I won't be specific:
. Structure: A vertical base based in a tower in the middle of a deserted enviornment (such as a desert or tundra far below) . General mechanics: Players can "hack" into control panels, AI defenders (a lot more complex), Players can scale walls . Winning mechanic that involves the destruction of a "fleet" that floats above in the sky. Perhaps where the raiders have to power up an orbital cannon and use it upon said "fleet" |

But why do that? The SMO is old, dull and in need of replacing. I still can't believe they're milking it even now. I planned to replace it with something far better and interesting.
If you want the best advice, don't plan to copy other peoples forts in some way. Use your imagination and think of crazy ideas, THEN contemplate whether they can actually be implemented. Bases need to be interesting, engaging, challenging and fun. Give players something to do for when there isn't a raid in-session. |

Still, just think of an original design.
When considering the shape of the base, perhaps just think "What shape don't people tend to use much?" or "What shapes aren't used together often?" |
