||| REVIEW OF NASA GOALS |||
With theh recent landing of MSL-3 on the surface of Mars (The third sucessful manned landing and second successful crew return since MSL-1), it is time to reassess the goals of the SEI, figure out what has been accomplished, what has not, and what should we do next. When the SEI Authorization Bill was passed by Marinio and Congress, it had three primary "tasks" for the agency.
1. Build orbital construction infrastructure in low-Earth-Orbit 2. Return to the moon, this time to stay. Construct an facility needed for an permanent human presence on the moon. 3. Go to Mars.
Of these goals, I can gladly say that all these have been accomplished. NASA has proven that it is capable of taking American crews to Mars and back, an feat that was done twice. So, what now? With the technology derived from the exploration of Mars, three options are at hand.
1. Expand lunar infrastructure to allow small-scale civilian colonization of the moon, eventually turning it into a small city like Washington DC.
2. Send crewed human missions to the outer planets, such as Saturn and Jupiter, to explore the moons. Several landing sites have already been pinpointed on Titan, Europa, Callisto, and Ganymede, and it would be favorable to establish an long-term human presence at these locations.
3. Build up an human presence on the Martian surface to establish an Martian Base from resource gathering in situ, with the hope of having it become self-suffiecent by 2014, along with construction of Mars cyclers that provide regular access to Mars.
All these options are under serious consideration by the Board of Directors and are within reach of current technology and funds.
|| NUMBER OF MISSIONS ||
This statistic shows how many missions have been launched as part of the Space Exploration Initiative by 6:32PM 12/28/2013
A total of 35 Missions have occured to Space Station Freedom and Delta. Many of these missions occur privately, or are only for roleplay and do not occur in-game.
A total of 10 missions have landed on the moon, and have established the first sustained human presence on another celestial body.
A total of 3 missions have landed on Mars. Only 2 have returned the crew successfully.
A total of 47 missions have started at the Superfacility.
-FAILED MISSIONS-
Expedition-1F Destination: Space Station Freedom Cause of Destruction: Main Engine Control failure on approach Outcome: Shuttle lost, currently on widely eccentrical solar orbit. One crewmember confirmed KIA, the other survived with injuries, later recovered.
Expedition-3F Destination: Space Station Freedom Cause of Destruction: C&G Terriost destroyed plane T-15 Seconds after takeoff. Outcome: Crew Lost, Shuttle destroyed.
Mars Surface Landing-2F Destination: Mars Cause of Destruction: Missed rendezvous point with return shuttle, lack of crew disclipine. Outcome: Mars Ship destroyed, crew KIA, Shuttle later retrived and returned to Earth with onboard autopilot controls.
|| CONCLUSION ||
As the new year rolls in, I believe that the National Aeronautics and Space Agency should pursue an series of projects that will extend human reach further into the solar system than ever before. Mars is not the end. Mars is not the limit. Mars is not the final goal. Onward to the stars.
