Father Callahan woke up with a harsh yell and sweat drizzling into his eyes. He blinked and looked around the room with sudden alertness. Then he eased himself and got out of his covers. He stretched and walked across the crudely carpeted floor to the bathroom.

He turned on the light, snared, and turned it back off. Then he looked at his reflection, always surprised to see he still had one. His prettily colored eyes were now dark and tired, the skin beneath them were black and sagging. He opened his mouth and gazed with fear.

His teeth were sharp and long, with the whitest shine he'd ever seen. He walked out of the bathroom and back into his bed. It was almost 40 years he'd been like this, he thought. Then he smiled and closed his eyes, waiting for the usual dream or night terror to occur. The one where he and a nobleman named Kurt Barlow sat in a winter lodge together, drinking cups of blood that were poured from the necks of the other residents.

Then, just before he began to drift into sleep, there was a knock at his door.

Same one ye.

Ah. Knew I heard that name before. Never read Stephen King so I have no idea where I heard of him from.

He grunted and then got out of bed for the second time. He lumbered over to the door and turned the knob, squinting at the incoming light. When his eyes adjusted, he saw a man standing at the other side of the doorway. The man smiled,

"Sorry to disturb you, sir," he said. "Some of the guests were complaining about screaming coming from your room. Everything okay?" Callahan thought for a moment, then responded.

"Yeah, just a bad dream." The man smiled as Callahan spoke. "Well, that's not exactly good news - but at least we know you're not in any harm." The man turned around and began to walk away when he abruptly stopped. "My name's Jack, by the way. Jack Torrance. I was the caretaker for the old hotel." Then he continued to walk away.

Callahan stood, trying to remember where he heard the name before. "Jack Torrance..." he whispered. He shut the door and crawled back into bed. He shut his eyes and that was when he remembered.

Jack Torrance was the man who went crazy one winter in the original Overlook Hotel. The man that burned it to the ground.

Father Callahan, although he already knew the existence of the supernatural, shuddered in fear. He did not sleep anymore that night.

Father Callahan began to make himself a cup of coffee. It tasted bad and nauseated his stomach, but he drank it anyway. It was the need to have some sort of normality in his damned life that allowed him to keep his sanity. That was the reason why he slept during the night, or at least attempted to, and stood awake during the day.

He also tried to keep away from drinking blood but the pain of not having it was unbearable compared to the pain of drinking something like coffee. That's one of the reasons why he'd travel the highways. Anytime he found road kill, he would take the dead animal and drain it's blood into a flask. However, he only drank at the time when he felt he could no longer live without it - and even then he only had very little.

The steam from the coffee drifted into his face as he stared at the brown liquid. He couldn't stop thinking about jack. He didn't realize certain things until the morning when he was more alert. He thought about how young Jack looked - even though the incident at the first Overlook was in the 70's. He couldn't be a vampire, could he? Callahan shrugged and continued to think.

The hotel that Father Callahan was staying in was built in the mid 1990s as a replacement for the Overlook Hotel. And even though it had a controversial construction, it was boasted as bigger and better. And, of course, safer.

Callahan took another sip of his coffee, felt his stomach lurch, and set his cup down. He sat there for a moment and let his eyes close. He was too relaxed to reopen them and he began to drift off into sleep. Another dream began to fade into view, this time he was in a ballroom. Classic music filled the air and he saw people of all sorts dancing and laughing.

He turned to his left and saw a bar where Kurt Barlow was sitting. To Barlow's side was Jack Torrance in a neat velvet suit, smiling and chatting. Callahan walked over to the both of them and they turned towards him. Barlow gestured Callahan to sit down and Jack began to order him a drink. Callahan accepted and began to drink - the first time something other than blood wasn't putrid. Actually, it was better than blood.

He ordered another one.

By the time Callahan awoke, he was lightheaded and dizzy. His mouth tasted of Scotch. He grimaced at the ache in his head as he stood up too fast. He placed a hand on the back of his chair to keep himself from falling and slowly walked over to his overnight bag. He searched through it's contents and pulled out an old, faded notebook. He opened it and turned the pages until he found his hand drawn calendar.

He had two more days in this hotel before he had to move on - and thanks to his nap, half of one was already gone. He then gave out an unintelligible grumble and decided to investigate the circumstances involving this "Jack" character. He laid the notebook on top of his overnight bag and walked towards the door. He opened it and peered into the empty hallway. Then he made sure he had his room key, shut his door, and began to walk onward.

He smiled as he came across a young boy playing in the hallway. Then he noticed the boy was all alone. Callahan asked the boy where his parents were and the boy shrugged. Callahan was about to say something when he was interrupted by a greatly disturbing voice.

"Take your medicine you ungrateful little pup! COME AND TAKE IT LIKE A MAN!" The boy heard this because right after the voice cried out, he himself got up and ran off for dear life.

Father Callahan stood there for a moment, unable to process what just happened, and then decided to get back to his room as quickly as he could. He scurried along the hallway with chills running up and down his spine. When he got to his door he opened it and slammed it shut as fast and hard as he could. That was when he wished he didn't.

The notebook he had left on his overnight bag was torn apart, pages were scattered everywhere. On them were badly made drawings, some of them pictures and some of them words. A few were images of his "adventure" back in Jerusalem's Lot. Others were images of what he assumed went on in the previous hotel.

Then others were words that scared him deeply. The one that frightened him the most wasn't about ghosts, or haunted rooms, or anything like that. It was something more pure. More physical. And it went by the name of Kurt Barlow.

After several moments of disbelief, Father Callahan began to throw the papers into the trash. He decided to keep the one which mentioned the return of Barlow. The paper didn't give much away as to how or why, it was just a simple sentence.

Kurt Barlow is not dead, for there are other worlds than these.

Father Callahan shuddered again as he reread the paper. Maybe it was better if he got rid of it, he thought, and threw it into the trash without a moment's hesitation. "There are other worlds than these," he whispered to himself.

He looked at the clock that was placed over his bed and noted that it was almost three in the morning. He sighed, knowing that getting back into his almost-human sleeping habits would be impossible that night and decided to turn on the room's small and outdated television.

He surfed from channel to channel, uninterested by the shows and movies they had to offer. Then, to his surprise, a strange popping noise erupted from the TV. It reminded him of the sound you get when cooking popcorn. The sound continued and the TV began to flicker with each and every pop. Segments of faces and people were shown, too fast for Father Callahan to identify any of them.

Then the TV abruptly went black. Silence filled the room. Then a picture faded into view on the TV screen. It was Ben Mears, a man Father Callahan knew for a short time in Salem's Lot, only this Ben looked sad and angry. Completely unlike the Ben he knew who was calming and strong.

"Hi," Ben said. Father Callahan looked on with shock. "Ben?" He questioned. Ben nodded, "Yeah, it's been a while since you left me in the 'Lot." Ben's eyes became cold and his face angrier. "Since you left me with Barlow and a town full of vampires." Callahan was about to respond when Ben's face began to change. It morphed into another man that Callahan knew a lot better.

"Father, it's me, Dr. Cody." He looked just as angry as Ben. "You know, they killed me after you left. Those vampires did it, Father. Where were you?" Callahan began to cry. "It wasn't my fault!" He closed his eyes so he couldn't see Dr. Cody's face. Then, he was forced to open them by another voice.

"I'm here too, Father Callahan."

His eyes opened to see Matt Burke, an old school teacher from 'Salem's Lot. Father Callahan smiled. Matt didn't look angry or upset. He looked happy and at peace. Then the TV began to pop even more than before. Black smoke lifted up from the wiring in the back and the picture flickered and became unidentifiable.

Then, for one quick moment, Father Callahan saw Matt's image, and Matt began to change himself. His face became gaunt as did his expression. His eyes became cold and enchanting. He was no longer Matthew Burke - he was Kurt Barlow. Then the TV turned off for good and the room was filled with black smoke.

I just looked up the word and was shocked at how wrong a meaning I had in my mind

Then I realized the word I was thinking of was "snarled".

Blonde moment. But that's why writers revise.

Yeah this whole thing is a crossover between the two. It's also what I would rather have happen to Father Callahan after Salem's Lot instead of what Stephen King did which was put him in the Dark Tower series. Which I haven't read but from what I know, it's really damn confusing.

oo
well, so far it's fairly interesting
but i feel like i just can't appreciate it like i would if i'd read the books

i don't know any of the characters that are haunting callahan
but i do sorta know that the shining had something to do with a ghost hotel
so that seems to be what's going on
