Dunwall

“Dunwall, the capital of Gristol and seat of the imperial government of the Isles, is an industrial fishing city-state that serves as the central setting. Whaling trawlers pack its harbor, bringing in a constant stream of the whale oil that powers its industrial revolution.”

This is a roleplay that is set in the world of a stealth action adventure game during the middle of the rat plague.

For any that has not played the original game, these are the basics that you should know about Dunwall. Even if you have played the game before, it is worth reading the below, though not mandatory.

Setting : Dunwall is a Victorian London-esque city that has become heavily industrialized and contains multiple advanced technologies. Heating and electric lighting is common in most houses.

Every technology is powered by whale oil. Whale oil is quite literally the basis of Dunwalls industrial revolution, and is relied on heavily.

A main focus on the city is the rat plague, an all consuming disease bred from the abundance of rats in the city. Irp, about half the population of Dunwall have succumbed to the plague.

The imperial government is at a loss for solutions, and has resorted to drastic measures to stem further infections. Walls of light quarantine infected areas, a dusk-to-dawn curfew has been instituted – which reduces the chance of humans coming in contact with the rats – and city officials have been given wide powers to deal with disruptive or uncooperative persons.

Thugs and bureaucrats alike take advantage of the misfortune that has befallen the city. An ever-increasing wealth gap determines secured health for those fortunate to have enough money, as the upper classes and their retinues hoard the elixirs that stave off the plague.

I'm assuming you all know general role-playing rules. Now a few extra notes.

1. No magic. Yes, I am aware that you were granted the Outsiders Mark and had powers in the original game. I am also aware, however, of how hectic this could get if everyone had the ability to "Stop time" and summon carnivorous rats.

2. In combat, please try to grant your opponent an opportunity to react to your attack. There are exceptions of this rule, such as when the opponent is completely unaware of oncoming attack and has little reaction time, but arguments on this subject will be terrible. Avoid exploiting this rule as well (Ex. Dodging every reasonable strike), for I will point out occasionally anything that displeases me or anyone else.

3. If an issue arises, PM me instead of posting on the wall. I will do my best to resolve the issue, but keep in mind this will be my first thread.

4. I'd prefer if you people remain rping as people. Sure, there are rats, but you will most likely be crushed if you honestly decide to rp as one.

5. Firearms are limited to flintlock like designs. (That also conveniently run on whale oil.)

6. People playing the original game play from the eyes of Corvo or Daud. I refuse to have characters that are noticeably similar/work under either of those two characters. The only things we are taking from the original game is the setting, not the plot.

7. I will accept and encourage any feedback. If you have any, please PM me it.

8. I shall not completely control the environment, though I probably will be controlling a few NPCs and, if needed, guards and officers of the law. (This may only apply at the beginning of the roleplay.)

Finally, and most importantly, I would like to point out that if you join, you are not here to power roleplay. You people might not even make combat oriented characters for all I know. And I might not even create or guide a plot (Keep in mind that I may). You are here to join other individuals create and live out an engaging story, which in my opinion is how every rp should be like.

Feel free to create your own CS format or opening paragraph. However, I require that it contains the following

Name
Gender
Age
Social Class(Aristocrat or Commoner)
A general idea of your characters appearance, including clothing
A general idea of your characters personality

I recommend adding a brief biography or past, though this is not mandatory as I know some roleplayers enjoy revealing it later on, or even making it later on as they get a better grasp of the story.

You can add anything else that you feel is relevant (Such as your families surname if you have chosen to be an Aristocrat).

We will begin in the Distillery district. If you have chosen to be an Aristocrat, I recommend beginning at a house party hosted by a Carmine branch family. If you have chosen to be a Commoner, you will have knowledge of a group of thugs that have plans (of unknown caliber or method) to steal plague staving elixir from the party. Of course, you are not bound by these openings, but it may make things easier.

It's the bare minimum, but it should suffice. Two things. Firstly, I'd prefer if Will's brother lived somewhere in Dunwalls wealthier districts instead of another city. This is because Nobility would congregate around and in Dunwall, and because due to the plague, entry is virtually impossible. That'll cause trouble with supplying money.

Secondly, I'd like to hear a bit of backstory on the inventor and his inventions. I like where its going, I just would like a few more specifics.

Will's Brother: A kind, but generally mysterious man, Will's brother Abrem often is seen appearing at parties and events with complete surprise, which he clearly makes up for with his gentlemen charm and kindness. He apparently got the wealth from their uncle when he passed away. He has not a harmful feeling in his body, but he will fend you off with his cane quite easily.

Inventions: Will, after Abrem got their uncle's money, was given a box of mysterious designs for machines that don't run on whale oil and notes. Reading them, Will became fascinated by the designs and took to inventing. His first invention blew up his home and would have killed him had Abrem not showed up to gift Will some money. The explosion, however, scarred his mind and made him 'unstable', so to speak. So, with a box of designs and notes from his dead uncle, Will strives to create the machines and overcome the need for whale oil.

A general idea of your characters appearance, including clothing: A black goatee, with a strong jawline and a scruffy piece of hair. He has green eyes, which are almost always the first thing people see before noticing his tattered black Victorian coat, waistcoat and other Victorian clothing.
A general idea of your characters personality: Mostly quiet due to his hard life, but he is kind to anybody that is his friend. He is also quiet, but kind in his actions to people who desperately need his help.


Bio: Basically just lived like a normal commoner.

Name: Abrem Nousinca Dinaval( Middle name inherited from uncle to symbolize him taking control of the Nousinca family.)

Gender: Male
Age: 29
Social Class(Aristocrat or Commoner): Aristocrat, though not by birth.

A general idea of your characters appearance, including clothing: A simple gray coat over a white shirt and matching gray pants, his hair is a odd color of both brown and gray, A trait that runs in the family( Will has it too). His eyes are also different, with one red and one gray( Genetic trait from his father's family). He uses a simple wooden cane that is sturdy but still attractive. Athletic and sharp, he can easily overpower any normal man with either his mind or his body.

A general idea of your characters personality: Overly kind and a swell charmer, Abrem will do everything in his power to make you a friend or at least a acquaintance. He does, however, prove a surprise as he shows up at parties when it's least expected. Violence was never in his blood, but he will defend himself in a way that won't harm the attacker.

Will's Brother: A kind, but generally mysterious man, Will's brother Abrem often is seen appearing at parties and events with complete surprise, which he clearly makes up for with his gentlemen charm and kindness. He apparently got the wealth from their uncle when he passed away. He has not a harmful feeling in his body, but he will fend you off with his cane quite easily.

A inheritance: Abrem has always loved his younger brother, and so when their uncle died and left all his wealth and titles to Abrem, Abrem promised to help Will. So, Abrem began to provide money to Will. Both to keep up his promise, and to see what Will does come up with as Abrem figured whale oil would have to end.
He seems to be the only one who can make sense of Will's inventions and make him seem normal.

(I'm placing the opening paragraph now. We'll see how it goes from there. Start wherever and whenever.)

The large railcars, about 4 in total, stop with a mild jolt as they reach the main street, causing the passengers inside to give faint yelps and mutter among themselves. They are in front of the first checkpoint, a large three story wall with two towers that rises above and watches the street. The entrance is covered by the first wall of light, which crackles absentmindedly as it waits for its next victim. Flanking on both sides of the street are equally tall but largely rundown apartments and buildings. Quite a few have windows boarded up with rotting wood. The bridge that brought them to the Distillery District is directly behind them, the sunset reflecting off the water of the river the bridge crosses.

Outside, there are two citizens standing in front of the first rail car. They both wear ragged clothing, ruffled hair, and both look like they swam through a sewer. The most disturbing feature is their eyes, which contain red blotches directly under the eye lids. They are yelling something incomprehensible, and attempt to shake the railcar before them.

“Weepers!” One of the watchmen on the wall quickly yells out to the guards below.

The two city-watchmen guarding the wall quickly move on to the shambling corpses without hesitation. The first one draws his sword – a dark violet-ish blade about 30 inches that is apparently never cleaned – and quickly slides it into the first weeper chest from behind, blood splattering across the front of the first railcar. The second guard has grabbed the remaining weeper by her shoulder and has tossed her off. This one lands harshly into an alleyway, and the second watchmen quickly runs after her to finish her off.

A pile of ash that is quickly run over as the railcar continues to pass through the wall of light unharmed and go further into the city. The nobles that make up the passengers in the cart appear to have paid no mind to the events that have transpired near them, instead talking about the party host, Philip Carmine. They talk happily, all dressed up in their best dresses, flawless hair, and happy-go-lucky expressions as they ride through the plague riddled streets.

A gruff voice can be heard inside the carts through an intercom. “We will arrive at the manor of the prestigious Philip Carmine in a short amount of time.”

Abrem, who actually payed attention to the events, shrugs it off and continues to chat up the fellow passengers.

"And so, thank you for your attention dear sir..." Abrem then turns to the ladies listening to his story." and you, madames..." Abrem justers, and a couple laughs accompany it.

Just then, the announcement kicks in and Abrem stops for a moment. "Well, its appears we all are a bit early... Now let me tell you of another wonderous story from my life... It was in the home of my now deceased uncle..."

Abraham sits in the dark of Distillery District, softly savouring the last remains of some stale bread. He eyed a bakery cautiously, allowing the scent of baked bread to fill his nose. He waited for the time the Distillery was least crowded, so that he may quickly grab another piece.

Alleyways of the Distillery District

A bit of time has passed, and the sun has soon fully set, darkening the body littered alleyways. What few citizens (or more appropriately, survivors) on the wrong side of the track move off towards their poorly maintained structures they call home. The exception, however, is a group of men noisily sauntering down an alley.

The group contains about 5 men with mashed in faces and dirtied "fine" work gear. Cleavers hang prominently from the majority of the groups belts. One carries a bottle, one carries a well used flintlock. They stop at a dead end in the alley, above the ledge being John Clavering Street - the main street that divides the district - and begin mumbling among themselves.

The Railcar

The group has been listening intently to the story, with the odd chuckle. Two men have been discussing over a bottle about how small the turnout has been. About 20 people.

"It's a shame really. Old friends have been cut from the guest list on the merest rumor of the plague." One mentions.

The voice is soon over the intercom once again. "We have arrived. Please have your invitations ready to show the guard out front."

A general idea of your characters appearance, including clothing: She has pale skin, accompanied with her long curly brunette hair and brown eyes. She prefers to wear her hair loose, thinking it's a waste of time to obsess over the more elaborate hairstyles. Despite her opinion, this doesn't hinder her beauty at all and is quite the pretty girl. A general idea of your characters personality: Being one of the younger aristocrats, she often keeps to herself. When she does talk, she is awfully quiet, and usually hard to hear. Most of the time she will stay on the outskirts of larger groups, refusing to try and take part in the action and instead watching and listening to others. Due to her elusive nature, she has little to no friends of her own. She is also easily scared, and has a large case of stage fright. If you are lucky enough to break past her shy nature, she will open up to be rather kind, with a fondness of animals.
