@epic, a semester is a division of the school year. Here's a simple breakdown:
progress reports: Sent home after every 1/8th of the school year, not a report card but more of a reminder as to what your grades are currently.
quarter report cards: Sent home after every 1/4th of the school year, some schools use quarters instead of semesters, some use both. These are usually used for college applications, just like semester reports.
semester report cards: Sent home after every 1/2 of the school year, and they're A BIG DEAL because these are usually what get sent to colleges/high schools. They can affect what classes your teachers recommend you take in ninth grade.
finals: Finals are at the end of every semester. Usually a final in a class is worth a set percentage of your grade, assuming the class is weighted and not an elective. Finals can be worth up to 50% of your grade, so basically they decide whether you pass or fail. These are taken right around the beginning of winter break.
NOTE* Elementary schools and junior high schools (years/grades 1-8) don't take finals unless a student is enrolled in a high school level course (Usually the lowest would be Algebra 1AB).
Hope you find this helpful. |
