Well it's easy, considering Y can be any value as well as X, so the equation you want is here (math included):
y=mx+b is slope intercept form: y is the y value. m is the slope x is the x value b is the y-intercept.
First, you need to find your slope which is found by subtracting Y sub 2 from Y sub 1, all over X sub 2 minus X sub 1. At this point, just plug in the points:
21-7 ____ = 14/4= 3.5 3.5= m(slope) 8-4
Now that you have your slope you must solve from here by plugging in numbers that have been given to find the y-intercept:
7= 4(3.5)+b 7= 14+b -7=b
So the answer to your question is:
y=3.5x-7
This is for all you kids that don't know.

a line passes through the points (4,7) and (8, 21) y=m(x)+b 7-21=-14 and 4-8 = -4. -14\-4 = 3.5
Take one of the pairs of points and plug it in. So 7=3.5(4)+b
b = y-intercept, what we need to find.
3.5x4 = 14 7=14+b 14-14 = 0/Cancels it'self 7-14 = -7
-7=B
So your equation would be:
Y=3.5(x)+(-7)

y2-y1 over x2-y1 gives you slope
then plug in slope and two points into y=mx+b and solve for b
then make the equation y=(answer for slope)x + (answer for y-intercept)
i dont feel like doing the numbers but that's how you do it |
