I had a 3DS XL with the special edition Pokémon design, which I had purchased in October, I believe. I took it to school today and it was clearly stolen by another student.
I shouldn't be angry because my mum bought it?
Think again. Not only I worked for the money (minimum wage, maybe about 25 hours) to buy that and the game that was in it, but I bought my own flight to England and back just to get one of those. I did that because Nintendo can't sell in my country, and it was the closest English-speaking place where I could buy those games.
And you want to know what makes me even more angrier than having lost something worth that much of my own work?
The boy who stole it.
He brings it to school everyday to play it. It's exactly mine too, because I recognize the scratches. However, since I couldn't "prove" it was mine, he won't give it back. I told him to go to the Mii Creator and he would see my Mii and my family's Miis. He had deleted all of them and replaced it with his Mii. And I told him the Pokémon game had a character with the certain name I picked, and I described my Pokémon team. He had deleted my file and started over too... even I brought the receipt and the box, and he still said I was accusing him to get the 3DS and get a lot of money (that thing would sell for a lot of money here since it's rare to find. We don't actually play handheld video games in my country).
Ugh. No words in any language could express these uncountable feelings of enragement. I need someone to hug. |

tl;dr:
I had a 3DS and a Pokémon game. I purchased it from England, a foreign country to me, because it doesn't sell in my own. I had bought the flight (for me, my mum bought her own ticket) to there and back. Then it was stolen at school by some worm who erased all my settings and won't give it back. The school's on his side too. |

"and theres your problem"
I had been with it the entire time, I looked away for literally two seconds, and it was immediately stolen. I even saw the shady guy scurry away as if he stole something.
"if it can't then just don't take it at all"
It can't. And I need to take it, because it's the only way I can get steps on the pédómeter! It rewards you for every 100 steps. As if I'm gonna walk for any other reason. :c |

Everyone else seems to bring their phones and music players to school. |

Sue him, you have the box and receipt for proof.
You can get him into massive trouble for theft.

I'll admit, it was stupid of me to have had it out of my bag for a few minutes.
But whose action was worse? The occasionally unwary guy's? Or the thief's? |

My parents were planning on doing that. |

I would sue if I were you. But there's other options.
Get his parents involved. If they're on his side, you can always egg their house <3
Follow the kid home. Get a group of friends. MAKE him give it back to you.
Sueing is the best option though. It's the best punishment for him.

Well, you're right. Even though you don't hear of this case in my school too often, it was something unpurchasable for kilometres outside my country. And the guy was a gypsy too. |

| No no, we do have video games, just not in handheld form. So I mean we do have video games that connect to the television. I'm in Moldova, small country landlocked by Ukraine and Romania. |

This is why you have to be careful with electronic devices and what not, since something like that happened with me losing an game for my DS about three or so years ago. If you can't keep it secure don't bring it at all even if you see others with electronic device's and what not.

| Like the others said, account him for theft if your evidence is as solid as you say it is. He'll have to return it or pay you lodsofemone which you could use to buy another. |
