The soil of Grem was universally barren and devoid of fertility. The air was dry, and the sun was always harsh. Variation was not to be found in these steppe flatlands, beyond the great metal monoliths that dotted the landscape. The gigantic things towered some twenty feet into the air, and were topped by three human faces- one for each surface of its triangular prism form- that were unique to that particular monolith. Into one of the faces blew great gusts of wind, and out of another blew slightly lesser gusts of wind. The third face surveyed its surroundings, with its limited cone of vision. To allow the monolith full surveillance, the faces took turns inhaling, exhaling and spying. Still, these monoliths had function; they brought life with them- the great trees, the rabbits and the elephants, and the men.

Yet, there was one breed of creature that the monolith did not bring. Indeed, nothing truely brought them to Grem; they're as integral to the land as air is to fire. The demons, the jackals, the bane; they go by many names given to them by man, but their nature is the same. They are the preservers of the realm, fulfilling their duty through both creation and destruction. They come in many forms, from rat-like creatures that hide in cracks and crevices of all sorts to gigantic, hulking four legged beings that stride over towns and crush all but the largest of settlements with a single step. They scour the land, looking for the creatures and beings that the monoliths called to it, and seek to destroy them. They reform the ruins of the settlements that they destroy once more into barren land, creating emptiness once more. In this way, the demons keep the equilibrium of the land.

Man too keeps the realm in an equilibrium, though he is an actor unaware of his role. Man is divided into two parties; those that can practise magic, and those that cannot. The term magic is of course only a loose and vague approximation; more accurate would be to say that man is divided into those that are deaf and those that can hear. The question of what they can hear once again brings us back to the monoliths, and their faces; the magically inclined can hear the voices of the monoliths, can speak the language of their faces. For as a monolith knows how to deter a demon, so to does the magician; his only real talent is the ability to place runes and wards, allowing him to shoo away and sometimes even harm their would be destroyers.

This ability to deter demons gives the tiny minority of humans that can hear an amazing and startling ability; the ability to settle. They can create camps and towns and villages without fear of being hunted down and destroyed by demons, unlike their unattuned companions, who must exist as either nomads, who assemble together in warbands and hordes, or- if the magician would permit him to do so- inhabitants of a pre-established settlement. Thus, man is divided into two parties; the settlers and the nomads.

Sadly, neither party have much access to material wealth. For the settlers, the ground is difficult to work and the soil is unyielding. They can procure little from the earth around them beyond bare essentials, making trade of any sort a difficult thing. And for the nomads, who can only exist upon a lifestyle of pillaging and theft, every day is a constant struggle. The whole history of man can thusly be summarised as the story of sheep and wolves in a climate hostile to both.

Yet recently, this balance was tipped towards man. A small settlement called for all those that could hear to join it, banishing those that were not magically attuned- seeing them, perhaps rightfully so, as inferior. There, with their great concentration of the attuned, managed to not only hold back demons but even to force back the deaf; leaving them completely to their own devices.

In time the magicians managed to go beyond their current abilities of simple wards and ruins and learnt to not only hear and parrot the language of the monoliths, but to speak it-- shout it. These "magetongues", as they came to style themselves, could push back the demons and the nomads alike; and, in time, they began to build great cities and capitals. Thus, the first nation was born.

Name: Alexander Isfansi

Settler or nomad?: Settler

Can you listen to the monoliths?: Of course, though I am all but deaf to them, comparatively.

Can you speak their tongue?: Yes, and quite affluently, I'm told.

Ag.e: Twenty six.

Appearance: Red hair, green eyes, rather pale skin, straight, rather strict posture, and a series of parralel scrathes on his face, nearing his nose, with the characteristic scarring of the demons.

Gender: mole

Bio: As a speaker, Alexander was rather revered in settler society, but proved to be flawed in the sense that he could barely listen to the whispers. So it was that alexander had been trapped in a nebulous half-zone that exists for those who are just above the average listeners, and more presitigious jobs have always been handed to others. Alexander has taken to drinking strong tea, in recent years, and living a slightly more secluded life.

Accepted, Tay. And yeah, go argue in a woman's restroom or something.
Name: Timur Kynge
Settler or nomad?: Nomad
Can you listen to the monoliths?: Yes.
Can you speak their tongue?: No.
Ag,e: 24.
Appearance: Timur is a tall and broad chested man, standing at six foot five. His facial features are bold, with a masculine nose and strong cheek bones. He sports a small beard, the one of a man who scarcely has time to consider his appearance. His beard is a chocolate brown, much like his eyes that are only a shade darker. His head lacks any hair, however; it is perfectly bald- unusual for a man who clearly still possesses his youth. He wears a long white tunic, a sleeveless cloak and a black headcloth. The tunic is loose fitting, allowing air to circulate, whilst not restricting movement. He carries a crude dagger on his person at all times, the bulge it produces sometimes being visible.
Gender: Male
Bio: Timur has wondered the steppe for most of his life; he has often been part of warbands, and sometimes even lead them. Though he has known for some time that he could settle down if he wishes, he chooses to wonder instead; finding that the life of a nomad is far more fitting to him. Currently, he travels alone, looking for a warband to join- or perhaps to create.
