I felt the pain sear through my wrist as the merchant grabbed my arm, twisting it easily “what’s your name” he paused and pulled my hood off my head “girl”. His voice was cold and cruel. “Names Lyla”, he smiled cruelly at me, I felt him twist my arm tighter and tighter until I was on the verge of tears. “You’re coming with my Lyla”, he spat out my name as if it was some kind of contagious disease, and I cringed slightly as he said my name. I twisted and wriggled but I couldn’t escape from his iron grip but since I couldn’t escape I hung from his grip like a dead weight. He kicked me hard in the knee once and I shot up, standing up fully and he said ‘don’t you dare try that again” I heard footsteps behind me and I heard the voice on my mother’s friend john “what’s going on here?” he asked. He was part of the royal guards so he was usually walking around looking for trouble. The merchant said, angrily “I found this girl stealing 10 silver coins from me when I was helping a customer. I glared at the merchant for a second then muttered “I didn’t steal the silver coins, I promise”. the merchant narrowed his eyes and then grabbed my other arm and put his hand into the sleeve of my dress, drawing out the 10 silver coins” john looked at the merchant and said “I’ll deal with her” he grabbed me by my hand and dragged me away and he knelt down until he could look fully in my eyes “Lyla, why have you been stealing money for these past few days?” I looked into his eyes for a second and then cast my eyes downward again before muttering “ma ain’t gonna like it if I tell you’ bout what’s goin’ on at home” john sighed and said “you can tell me “his voice was gentle and patient and I sighed “fine I’ll tell you all, but you ain’t gonna tell ma promise?” John nodded and said quietly “I promise” I looked straight into his eyes and said “May is sick and ma can’t make enough money at the tavern and she started to drink, just like when pa left so I’ve been working all the shifts and every single job in the whole tavern” John sighed and straightened up and said softly “come on, I’ll bring you back..”. I nodded quickly and followed him slowly as he said softly to himself “a 14 year old shouldn’t be working a tavern day and night” he walked briskly towards my mother’s tavern, he didn’t seem to notice that I had to jog to be able to right beside him. John thrust open the door and looked around, the few people who were in there looked up but then shot their eyes down, worried that he was there to take them away. He turned to me and said ‘where’s your mother”” upstairs in our room” I replied quietly.
John ran up the stairs quickly, I ran after him quickly, worried about what mother would say to him. He quickly walked into my mother’s room and leaned against the wall, clearing his throat to get her attention. My mother turned to face him and looked at him for a second then said calmly “why are you here?”John looked at her and said plainly “you shouldn’t be forcing Lyla to be working the tavern while you lay here, drinking away”. Mother said, quit coldly “well if my husband hadn’t run off, I wouldn’t be like that” she slammed her fist down onto the table next to her but john didn’t seem affected and he went on. “Well you could be at least working with her couldn’t you”, he tipped his head questionably, mother got up and walked over to him and said angrily “you have no business saying on what I should or shouldn’t be doing, I’ve been taking care of May for the past few months! Do you know how hard it is to get enough money for a doctor? They ask for 50 gold coins, we don’t have that money!” .I stood there, leaning against the wall silently. John only shook his head and sighed “Molly, you’re right, I guess I’ll be leave” he walked out of the room, giving me a sad look but I only nodded. Pain burned in my chest as it seemed to tighten up, I felt like my head was swimming in an ocean and I slide down the wall, staring past my mother and at the wall behind her.
After a few days, I felt like everything was back to normal, I still didn’t go to the courtyard but everything was still perfect. I sat down on the stone steps outside of the inn, watching all the horses and carriages go by when I heard the shriek” I got up quickly running into the tavern, I raced up the stairs and into my mother’s room, I saw her on the floor, sobbing next to my sisters body who laid perfectly still next to her on the bed. I ran over putting my hand on her chest checking for her heart but I couldn’t feel her heart thumbing, I quickly checked her pulse but there wasn’t any. The shock hit me like a wave and I stood still, tears burning my eyes but I fought them back, I couldn’t show my mother how sad I was. I knelt down next to her and whispered “ma, it’s all right” she whipped around glaring at me and she screamed “DO YOU THINK ITS ALL RIGHT THAT YOUR OWN SISTER DIED! YOU CAN’T JUST TELL ME EVERYTHINGS ALL RIGHT! ITS NOT ALL RIGHT LYLA” I could hear the anger in her voice and I got up, backing away quickly. My mother grabbed a bag that was next to her and stormed out of the room, I followed her slowly. She walked out the door and turned to face me and said softkly “I can’t bear it anymeroe lyla.. I’m leaving” she turned and walked away, not another word said she just turned and walks away. I ran after her grabbing her arm, tugging her back while I cried “ma don’t go please! Don’t go” I choked on the tears as sobs racked my body
