Western Games are typically more open and just "Do whatever the hell you want."
Japanese Games are usually really linear and on rails. |

| Western Games are more open, but Japanese games have more compelling stories. (For the most part) |

Western. Japanese games are usually either "check out dem tig o bitties dawg", "lel su quirky11!!", "umg kawaii desu..111!!!", or JRPGS.
(MGS surpasses all these archtypes, though.)

I also should've put this in the OP, here's the average western and japanese game:

Skyrim and Saints Row are Western games. They're for the people that just want to kill some things for things for laughs.
Japanese games like Dark Souls are for the people that want a challenge. Like, a really, really hard challenge. I've had Dark Souls for almost a year and I haven't beaten it yet... |

correction for oak and cheezit.
Japanese games are generally more like this:http://youtu.be/ij07CSsZ-rs
And Western games can be difficult as well. Hotline Miami, Super Meat Boy and Battletoads are examples of this.

western games. they actually try new things, they actually aren't all the same, and they aren't extremely pretentious.

dark souls might have been made by a japanese studio, but it's as western as you can get. if dark souls were a jrpg, it would be like final fantasy except every square is a random encounter, grind is to the max, and some stupid random encounter with 999999 health would appear every 10 squares just so make your grind pointless. oh, and combat would suck. |

"Japanese games like Dark Souls are for the people that want a challenge. Like, a really, really hard challenge." 1. if it wasn't for how bad the pc port was, i would've forgotten it was a japanese game 2. it's not remotely challenging anyway, and this is coming from someone who sucks at video games |

Alright, let's see. Call of Duty, Gears of War, Halo, Uncharted... Guess what kind of games they are. Then try to tell me again that they're not as repetitive as the eastern genre. That's just the way the gaming industry works.
Anyways, I have a stockpile of Eastern games I've yet to finish, with Battlefield 3 being the only major western title I've got (Because, eh, why not, I haven't played battlefield multiplayer in a long time).. And I have a pretty varied library of the games, from Radiant Historia, Exit, Ghost Trick, Tekken 6, Fate/Extra, Valkyria Chronicles, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, Phantasy Star Zero, Gods Eater: Burst, Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest IX, Tales of Innocence(Wish I had a PSVITA for the remake), and Personas 3 & 4. I think I'm doing pretty well from keeping myself bored.

Well western games focus more on gameplay and graphics and not much on the story When Japanese games are heavily story based |

Sorry, but I don't look on the wiki for a way to kill every boss in the game. |
