Right from google dictionary, this is the definition of "forget":

for·get
fərˈget/Submit
verb
1.
fail to remember.
"he had forgotten his lines"
synonyms: fail to remember, fail to recall, fail to think of;

---------

Let's say you leave your book at home and you need it for school. You get to school and notice that you dont have the book. You did not forget your book. You left it at home.

What i'm saying is that you cannot forget something because in order to know you "Forgot" it, you must realize that you do not have it. If you realize that you do not have it, you did not forget it but merely left it somewhere.

And this is more pointless internet for you all. Thank you for reading.

You can forget about something until something else triggers your memory

But you never realized that you forgot something. Therefor you never forgot it. It's impossible to forget something that you never thought you forgot.

In simpler terms, if you realize that you forgot something, you did not forget it.

But it says right there that forget can mean "fail to think of". The kid forgot about(Failed to think of) the book until it was too late. Either that is correct, or my brain exploded and I can't think properly.

@scooby

I was just going to add to my last post.

If you dont realize that you forgot something then where does the term "Forget" come into play?

When you say you forgot something, you realize that you cannot remember it. So you did not forget it. Therefor why would you ever use "forgot". It's a useless term ;)

You don't have to forget something forever. An example; Say you came home after school on Friday and had homework but decided to do it later but then get caught up in games that you don't even do it. You would have forgotten about doing the homework. You then go to school on Monday and remember that you didn't do your homework. Although at that moment you may remember the homework during the weekend you had forgotten it.

>"he kid forgot about(Failed to think of) the book until it was too late."

He would not have said "I forgot the book" until it was too late. To have forgotten would mean that he knows he didnt have the book. But he didnt know that he didnt have it until class started. Therefor he didnt forget it.

What if someone forgot something and didn't know it, but somebody else realized that "someone" forgot it. It's still been forgotten by that "someone", but not by other people. And it will remain that way. Right? Is that still "forgotten"?

@scooby's previous post

easily arguable

You would have realized that you forgot your HW. Therefor you never forgot it.

@bodorol

It was never forgotten because someone knew that they forgot it.

The definition is "fail to remember" during the weekend you failed to remember. That's a fact, the definition says nothing about having to forget the thing forever to have forgotten it.
