Before reading on, this is just a continuation of this
http://www.roblox.com/me-on-MLPs-writing-place?id=68080317
Alrighty then, let's begin with 3...
3. The moral of the episode is that you should follow your instincts. Fair enough. But the way in which it's done is, once again, ridiculous. There is no solid evidence to prove that Cadence is evil, so if the Borg Queen hadn't been stupid enough to reveal herself at the end of the first episode (more of that in point 5), the plot might have gone on in an entirely different fashion. Thus the moral becomes: follow your McCarthyist convictions, no matter how unfounded they are, because if you think a person is evil based on behavior (you know, the same indictment as in the Salem Witch Trials), she's evil. No two ways about it.
4. Okay, so Princess Nicole Oliver doesn't realize there's been a swap of princesses and that the Borg Queen has taken place at her side? Is she that stupid, or is it just another "Oh-Celestia-Knew-It-All-Along-But-She-Was-Testing/Trolling-The-Mane-Six-episode"? Either way... it's ridiculous.
5. The villain is an idiot. What was the point of revealing herself to TS at the end of the first episode? Had she kept up her disguise she could have tricked her into not showing up at the wedding at all, thereby removing one crucial element that could overthrow her plans. Instead, she - in a true Dr. Evil fashion - puts her in an easily escapable position. Her stupid move also ensures that TS goes from feeling disillusioned and insecure about her instincts to being absolutely convinced that the impostor is evil. She blows her cover like an idiot and pays for it in the end.
It's not funny when the only thing that stands between a stupid protagonist and certain defeat is that the villain is even stupider. It made me facepalm like I was channeling the spirit of Captain Picard.
6. STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES In Austin Powers, it was fun to see Mike Myers being captured and put in an easily escapable situation from where he could return to win the day. Even Dr. Evil made fun of this villain cliché. Here, it's just absurd and ridiculous.
For instance - why are the walls of the cell so weak that they can be shattered by a single bolt of energy? Did the Borg Queen want TS to escape? That would explain why she was stupid enough to put her in a cell that's exactly adjacent to that where the real princess's being kept.
7. "Amnesia: The Pony Descent - or how easy it is to forget when you don't proofread the script"
Now we get to the part of the episode that many bronies consider to be "mind-blowing". Cadence performs that little dance they had and Twilight recognizes her as a real princess. Surely, I have nothing bad to say about this ingenious plot twist?! (puns, puns everywhere)
But yes, I do.
This aspect had a good potential. In fact, even as the dance was first shown in the first episode, I thought it would have an impact later on; if a gun is on the mantel in Act I, it will be discharged in Act III, you know. But the writers ruined that only moments afterwards, by letting Twilight SHOW the dance to the impostor. A secret is only a good means of identification if the villain doesn't know about it. So for all Twilight knew, that Cadence might well have been the villain, repeating the dance she was shown in the first episode.
8. "The Possible Escape" So... Cadence was "held captive" because she is, quite naturally, one pivotal element that could upturn the impostor's plans. Seems legit. Only she wasn't even held properly. As the camera pans away from the scene in point 7 of my critique, we see that she wasn't even being kept in a cell, but at the end of a long tunnel. So why didn't she escape before? Because she was waiting for Twilight Sparkle? Did she read the script, too?
I mean, she's one of them thingamajig horses with a magic horn AND WINGS. The way out is guarded by three stupid bridesmaids that she distracted herself with a BOUQUET OF FLOWERS! There's no logical reason why she wouldn't have escaped before.
9. Even more stupid villainy
A minor point, but why did the impostor immediately admit to being guilty the moment real Cadence showed up rather than, say, turn the tables and accuse HER of being an impostor? Katrana Prestor didn't admit to being Onyxia until the game was truly up, if you've played Vanilla WoW like I have...
10. Princess Celestia has Amnesia
After her inglorious defeat, Nicole Oliver says:
"The elements! You must get to them, and use their power to defeat the queen!"
But wasn't it established in The Return of Harmony that only Celestia can open the door to the elements with her horn? So what, did they unscrew her horn and put it on a keyring? Or was that line just an excuse to give us a mindless fight scene involving the mane six and a legion of Borg? I call the latter. Finally, 11 The big dumb ending. All hope is lost. Nicole Oliver's in a cocoon. The guard is overwhelmed. Andrew Francis seems to have been lobotomized, and the mane six are poised against impossible odds. How will they overcome this?
I got a bad vibe straight away as the Borg Queen sent away all her drones from the chamber, leaving her alone with the mane six. When that happens - yet another villain cliché of leaving oneself defenseless at the heroes' convenience - you know a disappointing resolution isn't far behind. It wasn't, either. Still, I did not expect the extent of the awfulness.
"My love will give you strength." SERIOUSLY? ARE YOU KIDDING? Look, love isn't bad in its own, but you can't use it to replenish your mana bar! That's what evocation is for, if you've specc'd in the arcane talent tree. I don't mind love giving you strength as in "It feels totally hopeless but I'll keep trying, because I'm in love with Cadence/Arwen/princess of your choice". But when you use it as a deus ex machina ending, things start to suck.
*sigh* And, of course, we have a shockwave that magically fixes everything (it even gives Cadence a facelift and a makeover, although - naturally - it's never explained). Team Rocket's blasting off again, and the day is saved
We also have Luna entering the stage like an oblivious jerk, and it's never explained where she was.
This episode gets a 2/10.
MLP isn't worth it. |
