Curious. I don't really know what a "discrete" GPU is, and on another thread people said to get a discrete GPU with the PC I want.

A discrete GPU is an actual graphics card.
I would strongly suggest getting a 280X (7870), they are $200, and drop in price from time to time... It is really worth the money over a $150 card.

@rampage
I thought the 280X was the 7970, and the 7870 is now called the 270X? |

@Rampage So it's alright to get a GDDR5 graphics card with DDR3 RAM?

@rose
Yes, GDDR is essentially Graphics Memory, only for your GPU. GDDR5 is faster than GDDR3, but it doesn't matter what RAM you have for your PC (in this case, DDR3).

@Rampage Another question since I'm looking at other GPU's: Which is more powerful, 1GB GDDR5 or 2GB GDDR3?

| Amount of VRAM is a very bad measurement of how powerful a card is. |

2GB of GDDR3 is more beneficial.

it depends on the GPU not just the RAM a 50$ GPU could have as much VRAM as a 150$ GPU they wouldn't be alike in any way

650 ti boost x2
First off, it is better than the 270x Second it is commonly on sale for 110~ dollars so if you get two in SLI then you're pretty good. |

| 270X is actually better than the 650TIB but it costs more than the 7950. |

@Coolman If you viewed LinusTechTips the benchmarks say otherwise (Slick runs all cards overclocked as far as possible for benchmarks, and when overclocked the 650ti runs better) |
