Here are some helpful tips that will help you be a better player, and not ragequit after the first game:
1. GET SOME FRIENDS. Seriously though, soloqueue is called yoloqueue for a reason, as it is nothing but pure rage and frustration. Duoqueue is the same thing, three or more people and it becomes fun. You also get to troll with the meta, have great team coordination, and not fight over roles.
2. THINK ABOUT THE ROLE YOU WANT TO PLAY.
Do you want to be a ranged glass cannon that is horrible early in the game, but progressively get stronger and stronger until you are a terrifying threat that can two-shot everyone? Then go play as an Attack Damage (AD) Carry. Caitlyn is the best starting ADC, as she has a long range, and teaches you many things about the game.
Do you want to be the team's ward b- I mean ward buyer, protect your ADC at all costs, and have tons of utility without needing items? Then go play as the support. Supporting is a job nobody wants to do, but maining supp can come with benefits. I recommend playing either Sona or Thresh, Sona if you want a passive healbot or Thresh if you are the type who wants to reach in, tank all the damage, and set up kills for your carry. Thresh is difficult though.
Do you want to either have extreme mobility or extreme AoE, while having extreme damage early in the game? Then go play as a Mid. Mid laners include assassins and mages. If you want an assassin, go with Zed for the single-target assassination or Katarina for the teamfight cleanup (everyone's dead except you, but all the enemies are low health). If you want a mage, go with either Lux or Annie. Lux if you want long range sieging, Annie if you want shorter range with more offense.
Do you want to be the tank? Go Top. Top is for bruisers (tanky damage) and tanks, with an occasional anti-tank. Go either Cho'Gath, Renekton, or Darius. It's impossible to not like Cho'Gath because he stays in lane forever, deals tons of damage, casts tons of spells, has tons of aoe cc, and most importantly NEVER DIES. Renekton is THE definition of a bruiser, being an earlygame monster and a lategame unkillable tank. Darius is a bruiser anti-tank who is super easy to play.
Do you want to not have a dedicated lane, but live off of neutral monsters and ambushing the lanes? Play a Jungler. I recommend Jarvan IV or Udyr. Jarvan is THE ideal jungler, and always has been. He's tanky, deals incredible damage, and most importantly good ganks. Udyr is a difficult champion, but his skill cap is near limitless, so the earlier you start learning him the better. He is extremely versatile, and very strong if you can play him correctly.
3. FOLLOW A GUIDE. You don't want to be building 6 warmogs and maxing smokescreen first on Graves. Mobafire, Solomid, and Lolking are good guide sites (mobafire is prettiest, solomid has the most pro guides, lolking is newest). Don't be afraid to try new things even though your current horrible build "works for me". I used to think that Akali was supposed to be built AD, and refused to switch to AP. And don't respect the guides like the holy bible, you can go a bit off the build. Eventually, you will know all the items in the game and won't need guides any more.
4. PLAY BOTS. Low-level normals are extremely unreliable. Everyone either sucks really badly because they're new, or they are smurfs of level 30 accounts and will stomp everything. First play Beginner bots until you know the basics, then hop into Intermediate. I don't care if you feed hard, Beginner gives bad habits after a while. Once you start reaching the point where you think about how to manipulate the bot AI, you play too much bot games and it's time to go to normals.
5. LEARN HOW TO LANE. In lane, your goal is not to kill the enemy champion, it's to kill the minions. And you don't just bring minions from 100 to 0 health, you wait until they have been damaged heavily (like 20% health or less), and kill them then. You get the gold from it, but you don't push the lane as hard. Champions are unreliable sources of gold that are hard to kill (and also go down in value as you continously kill them), minions are consistent. 20 minion kills are worth even more kills than 1 champion kill. I'm not saying to play passive, you should still harass often especially if you're ranged vs a melee, but don't go full bloodthirsty for no reason. Potions are far more useful than they look at first, buy a ton of them when you go back. And, if you're at low health and mana, and the creep line (where melee minions meet) isn't at your tower, RECALL before you get towerdived. If you lose lane, just play passive and farm up. If you win top, snowball on it and take the tower. If you win mid, roam to other lanes to gank. If you win bot, kill the Dragon.
6. OBJECTIVES > KILLS/FARM. Even level 30s in Silver don't understand this. You don't win a game by reaching 50 kills, or by earning 100,000 gold. You win a game by taking objectives and killing the enemy nexus. Did you ace them (All Champions Eliminated)? Take a tower, take dragon, or if it's lategame, take baron. Killing wraiths or recalling means that you gained nothing from the teamfight.
7. DON'T DIE. Death is bad in League. You have to wait a long time to respawn, walk all the way back to lane, and lose jungle buffs. In addition to that, the enemy got gold from that. You will be behind by the time you return to lane. You might think, "Oh, it's just two kills on a Fiora, what can she do" until she 1v5s your team. Don't try to take risky kills (like towerdives), WARD WARD WARD WARD, and try not to force trades unless you win them super hard.
8. TEAMFIGHTING. If you want to get in a teamfight, make sure your entire team is there before initiating. In order to initiate, you send someone (preferably tank) to the front to cast a spell, preferably something involving crowd control (CC, stuns/snares/silences/slows) or AoE. ADCs stay at the back and shoot the highest value target THAT IS SAFELY IN RANGE. Supports either use spells and stay back (soraka, sona, nami), go in and initiate (thresh, leona, alistar), or peel (get enemies away from) the ADC (leona, nami, thresh). Assassins either dive onto the carries and kill them (survival not required, zed, rengar, and leblanc are examples), or go in at the perfect time in order to killstea- I mean clean up teamfights (katarina, kha'zix, akali). Mages just cast fancy magics, I guess. Tanks initiate, stand in front of the team, and try to CC everyone. Junglers vary heavily, but most of the jungle-specific roles are terrible at teamfights and either just go full tank or splitpush (four guys pushing one lane, one pushing another).
Here are some perfect teamfights:
http://youtu.be/oHmtSKHrDyI - That positioning couldn't have been any better. Seriously.
http://youtu.be/sru1VjXU7Kg - Korean version because their shoutcasting is hilarious. Karthus managed to get all his spells out before fully dying, Nautilus and Renekton tanking all the skillshots for Ez, and then Doublelift goes full Doublelift mode, positions himself perfectly in a way that he can kill Varus with no response, and the entire team was dead from there.
http://youtu.be/A-VK2jTFHco - Poor initiation by Nocturne (too deep in), but Ezreal and Orianna were protected and two PERFECT ults there won team Alternate a place in the European championship series.
9. THROWS. Just because the score is 20-8 doesn't mean it's impossible to lose. With the wrong decisions, the tide of the game can be changed, not by the enemy playing well but by your team playing horribly. Throws include trying to kill Baron while the enemy team is alive (the most famous throw. never do baron, kids), teamfighting under tower, towerdiving in general, sitting on your advantage and wasting it, splitting up and getting caught out, allowing the enemy to splitpush, playing teamfights horribly (not protecting the adc or positioning correctly), going into lategame with a fed earlygame champ (pantheon, akali, shaco), and many other ways to throw are constantly present. If you have a lead, take advantage of it and play somewhat safe during it.
10. SMARTCAST, AND UNLOCK YOUR CAMERA. I don't care how uncomfortable and hard it is to play without them, they are crutches that grow on you really quickly and are difficult to remove once there. If you insist, you can use smartcast range indicators (holding down button allows you to aim).
11. TRY NOT TO RAGE. League is a frustrating game, but if you give into the rage, then you're just making things worse. Just don't do it. You lose more games, and you get banned.
12. ONLY PLAY A GAME IF YOU KNOW YOU CAN FINISH ONE. Don't go queue up 10 minutes before you have a doctor's appointment. The game is serious about leaving, and you can get banned.
And I know a ton League related. Ask me anything, and I probably know the answer. I'm Silver III before you ask about my rank, and I main Akali (Viktor close second). |

Interesting champion pool. A lot of the champions are no longer as strong as they used to be (alistar, shaco, and sivir used to be op).
I play Akali, Viktor, Katarina, Zed, Talon, Cassiopeia, Ezreal, AP Corki, Karthus, Galio, Sona, Soraka, Evelynn, Rumble, Graves, Kog'Maw, Veigar, Karma, Gangplank, and more. Akali will forever be my main no matter how much she sucks now. |

April 9 were the nerfs that completely destroyed her.
"Mark of the Assassin Initial damage reduced to 35/55/75/95/115 from 45/70/95/120/145. Mark detonation damage ability power ratio increased to 0.5 from 0.4. Shadow Dance Essence of Shadow charge rate increased to 35/25/15 seconds from 25/20/15."
That doesn't sound like much, but those changes made Akali have THE WORST pre-6 laning in the game. Worse than Kassadin and Poppy combined. She can no longer actually last hit with her Q, and for an earlygame champion her damage was pathetic.
But the Shadow Dance change hurt even more. It would take as long as most champions ultimates just to get three stacks.
They tried buffing her a little bit on May 17, and although the buffs were nice, she still sucks. I think she just needs a rework, if she is ever balanced then she pubstomps hard.
"Twilight Shroud Now grants vision in the area of effect. Shadow Dance Essence of Shadow charge time reduced to 30/22.5/15 seconds from 35/25/15."
No change to her Q, and no change since then. |

Graves is great. You preferably want to build a ton of AD on him because his spells have such high ratios, max Q > E > W, take Flash and Ignite, and you trade by EQW and autoattacking while running away. In teamfights, just wait until the enemies are grouped up, then QR. I personally start Longsword + 1 health pot + 1 mana pot > Bloodthirster > Berserker's Greaves > Blade of the Ruined King > Infinity Edge > Phantom Dancer > Last Whisper. Just remember to use the BotRK active, it makes a huge difference and is currently overpowered.
And with Gangplank, you either build him as a tank or you build him with crit. I can't help you with tank, but with crit, you max Q > W > E, and take Flash and Teleport. Start Rejuvenation Beat + Faerie Charm + 2 mana pots and 1 health pot > Philospher's Stone > Avarice Blade > Statikk Shiv > Ionian Boots of Lucidity > Infinity Edge > Trinity Force > either second Infinity Edge or Phantom Dancer (IE for spamming Q, PD for actually autoattacking) > Sell Philosopher's > Guardian Angel or Warmog's. You sit in lane all day, farming, farming, farming, farming. Because you are HYPER SUSTAIN BANKPLANK. Teamfight happening at bot? Ult down there, and if needed waste your precious teleport. Kill as much minions as you can, for that gold. In teamfights, laugh as you crit for 1.5k just from pressing Q. |

they're different games anyway
league is more action-oriented, focused on mobility and skillshots. dota is more strategy oriented, focused more on team coordination and using spells at the right place at the right time. |

i guess you could refer to it that way. league is deeper than that though. it takes more than just left clicking a target to kill a guy. for example, even with the easier champs it takes numerous button presses and actually landing skillshots in order to kill someone, and this must be inputted in under a second. i'd say it's actually easier to kill people in dota, as unless you're an extremely fed katarina you can't kill an entire team just from pressing one button in league. league also has, you know, strategy unlike cod.
cod isn't a terrible game though, it's great at what it does best. |
