Zombies. (pause) Now just let that sink in. You are currently judging a round with pieces about self empowerment and participating in civic activities, but zombies? Split seconds after I uttered the word, your parietal lobes sent a signal to your amygdala, in the millions of neurons that build this city on rock and roll, the firing synapses that build civilization, your amygdala turns the word into a meaning into fear. That’s right; fear. The idea of humans walking around is fine in your world. You are probably imagining a family in a picturesque setting, possibly a park with an unnaturally blue sky. There is a dog playing catch with a Frisbee and a mother lovingly setting a picnic on a cliché red and white patterned blanket. Now remove the thing that makes those people human; the soul. The soul is what Sigmund Freud would describe as part of the superego, the series of rational thoughts that keep the id and the ego in check. Remove the concept of mind and let id take over. You now have a shell of a human but driven 100% by any given desire. This creature is frightening on its own.
Now make that creature driven by human flesh. This is the innate fear ingrained in your primal instincts. It tells your body to fear something you have never encountered, something that you’re not likely to see, but you fear it none the less.
This is not about fear, it is about taking that fear and kicking it square in the teeth with the jackboots of preparedness.
It shouldn’t take a breaking news alert for you to wake up and realize zombies are real and the war with them has just begun. Zombies- a new threat in today’s world. Movies, Books, and Halloween costumes based on zombies are the new thing. So why aren’t people across the world preparing? Things potential survivors will want to take in to account are survival, weapons, and travel and location, however you may be wondering what a zombie is and where they came from.
A brief history of zombies: the popular zombie, “theorists of zombie culture -such as Kyle Bishop or Jamie Russell- attribute the origin of the zombie to Haitian folklore and the hybrid religion of voodoo.” Research on zombies has been done by a student at the University of Maryland getting his PHD; David Paul Strohecker. According to National Geographic zombie cases have been around for hundreds of years. Zombies originally started amongst the slaves. The slaves would perform voodoo on themselves, then after death they would come back and torture the slave master. However the beloved zombie was not the flesh eating cannibal we see it as today. The whole flesh eating idea came from the fact that the zombies couldn’t hold weapons and didn’t have the ability to fight. The only defense the zombies had was to bite and claw those who came after them and those who the zombies went after, thus killing the victim. Think about it when you were being attacked by your older brother and were too small to punch him back, what was your defense? That’s right you bit the crap out him until he left you alone. The zombies today are not portrayed as history once said they were.
Why should you be worried you ask? How come you should be prepared? There may come a day when zombies overcome the human race. When this day comes you probably won’t know where any other humans are, or if there are even any left. You will have to be able live under the radar yet still move around. The survivors have to locate each other; if the human race is to survive everyone must depend on each other. Face it people, Hollywood is not going to help you in this real life situation.
In order to survive the living dead, immediate action must be taken. Survival is key. The first step is to find a backup home also known as a retreat. Preferably this backup home should be on a piece of land uninhabited by other humans. If there are uninvited humans on your new piece of land, they could allow more problems to happen; they could actually have the disease- which causes people to become the living dead, more resources would be taken up and they could sacrifice you. Animals are fine, as they could provide a food source and also be a warning sign to predators intruding your home. While picking your new safe house, location, climate and other natural factors are very important. The location of your hideout is very important in how you equip yourself and your party to live there. For example, if your house is in the Arctic, not the best choice, one would have to prepare the land strategically to prevent any zombies from entering; certain precautions would have to be taken to ensure that the arctic was safe. On the other hand, different actions would be taken to survive on an island with hotter climates. Building materials that are naturally found in your new home can be an important factor in survival. If your zombie proof island doesn’t have natural items, such as wood or big rocks to build with, guess what you’ll be paying to ship to your new home?!
Preparation is an absolute necessity in order to overcome the zombies. It will take more than one shopping spree to complete your survival kit. When considering what to stock up on, remember the basics. Medical supplies and non perishable food item should be at the top of your list; these supplies should be in great stock as who knows how long you will be stuck without rescue. There is no time to wait to prepare. Don’t go thinking that when your favorite news channel shows live footage of zombies downtown, that you’ll be able to run over to Wal-Mart and stock up on supplies. It doesn’t work that way, you have to be preparing for this apocalypse over a period of time. Remember all those Doomsday prep people who you thought were crazy, yeah, not so crazy now are they. On your “Survive the war” shopping list you should have: flashlights, batteries of all sizes, two way walkie-talkies, water- this includes anything that helps you access water—water sanitation, and bottles to carry your water, matches and lighters to start fires, Ammo- this part is important because you only need to stock up on ammo that suits your weapon(s) any weight you don’t have to carry should you have to move and walk for miles needs to be left behind. You will also need a semi large backpack to carry your equipment because face it people, you can’t hold all your chocolate bars and fight of zombies at the same time., rope to scale high areas and to hang supplies as zombies can’t climb, water and other weather proof shoes that have already been broken in and someone to travel with. Traveling alone is one of the stupidest things you could do, if something happens to you, and BOOM you’re on the ground freaking dying, no-one can search for safety or fend off the oncoming zombies .
Knowing your weapons is also pretty important. If you have never fired a gun in your life, chances are when you’re being attacked by zombies; you won’t be getting a head shot on your first try. If you do, then consider yourself lucky and don’t attempt it again. In order to adequately familiarize a willing person with firearms, the local shooting range is the perfect place. Being able to shoot a zombie in the head and not being able to could mean life and death for you and your crew. Let’s go Hunger Games for a second here. First off TEAM PEETA! But back to the big deal, you don’t see Katniss trying to load her bow with a bullet, if she had done that she wouldn’t have won the game and there wouldn’t have been a second book.Weapons can include anything from a baseball bat to a rocket launcher. Certain weapons are a bad idea, such as the rocket launcher because they require ammo that is not easily located. Whereas guns that are generally used for hunting animals can be found easier and their ammo can be located as well. Depending on where you are and how far you’ll be traveling if you are traveling, helps you make the choice of what gun or weapon to carry.
Travel- this could be a perfect way to get somewhere fast, but it could also be a suicide. Vehicles rely on fuel- something that will be pumped dry when everyone fills up their cars in order to be ready for the apocalypse. If you must use a vehicle travel during the day and keep backup fuel in the back. This is almost rarely encouraged because roads will become blocked by obstacles or are to torn up for everyday vehicles to drive on. Motorcycles are also a stupid idea because they offer no protection, same with four-wheelers. Bicycles are OK for maneuvering, but you would have to stop and rest and zombies would probably follow you and maybe even eat you. The best bet would be to travel by foot during the day. Never travel at night. Traveling by foot allows you to hopefully see the zombie before they see you. When traveling by foot try your hardest to avoid ravines and hills, it will only make it harder for quick escape and make it easier to be seen. Zombies can see prey from a mile away. Choose your choice of travel carefully.
The zombies are coming. You have to be prepared for this day. There is no time to wait, preparation must start now. A zombie has no feelings; they will attack you. If you want to survive, you have to be ready. Now would be the time to get your crap together, get your supplies ready, find another home, practice using your weapons and re-subscribe that membership to the gym. Don’t do this and you’ll be the zombies next main meal. |
