| I've been trying to find a way to this for eons, because TextEdit and Microsoft Word don't work on my Mac desktop. |

| Make it a .jpg and go to develop-create new-decal and upload it from there. |

I've heard of people using Gimp, Paint.net and Microsoft Paint will work too. I use Paint.net because it allows you to make transparent parts for your decals. I don't know if Gimp does that because I haven't tried it. Microsoft Paint doesn't.
