"5n - 16 - 8n = -10 n=?"
1. Combine like terms
5n - 8n = -3n
2. Move the -16 to the other side of the equal sign
-3n = -10 + 16 (When you move a number from one side of the equal side to the other, it changes signs. Since the number was -16 originally, it become 16 when you switch sides)
3. Add -10 + 16
-10 + 16 = 6 -3n = 6
4. To get n all by itself you have to divide it by -3 (because you have to do the opposite operation. It was originally being multiplied, so you have to divide). Since you are dividing -3 on one side, you have to do the same thing on the other side. Divide 6 by -3.
-3n / -3 = 6 / -3
n = -2
Now try the rest on your own. |

Naw, I'm giving all the work so you can see how it's done:
1) 5n - 16 - 8n = -10 Add like terms. 5n+-8n= -3n -3n-16=-10 Add 16. 16+-10=6 -3n=6 Divide -3. 6/-3= -2 n= -2 CHECK ANSWER! Plug it in: 5(-2)-16-8(-2)= -10? PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction 5(-2)= -10 -8(-2)= 16 -10-16+16 -16+16=0 -10 left over. Equation is correct so -2 is your answer.
2) x - 1 + 5x = 23 Add like terms. x+5x=6x 6x-1=23 Add 1. 23+1=24 6x=24 Divide by 6. 24/6=4 x=4 CHECK ANSWER! Plug it in: (4)-1+5(4)=23? PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction 5(4)=20 4-1+20 4-1=3 3+20=23. Equation is correct so 4 is your answer.
3) -49 + 18 - 19j = -28 Add like terms. -49+18= -31 -31-19j= -28 Add 31. -28+31= 3 -19J= 3 Divide by -19. 3/-19= -0.15 J= -0.15 (Answer didn't add up but I can't find my mistake. If anyone can find it and fix it please do so.)
4) -5(x - 3) = -25 Divide by -5. -25/-5=5 x-3=5 Add 3. 5+3=8 x+8 CHECK ANSWER! Plug it in: -5(8-3)= -25? PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction 8-3=5 -5(5)= -25. Equation is correct so 8 is your answer.
5) -10 = 5(2w - 4) Divide by 5. -10/5= -2 -2=2w-4 Add four. -2+4=2 2=2w Divide by 2. 2/2=1 w=1 CHECK ANSWER! Plug it in: 5(2(1)-4)= -10? PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction 2(1)= 2-4= -2 5(-2)= -10. Equation is correct so 1 is your answer.
6) -3 = -3(2t - 1) Divide by -3. -3/-3= 1 1=2t-1 Add 1. 1+1=2 2=2t Divide by 2. 2/2=1 t=1 CHECK ANSWER! Plug it in: -3(2(1)-1)= -3? PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction 2(1)= 2-1= 1 -3(1)= -3. Equation is correct so 1 is your answer.
7) -15 = 5(3q - 10) - 5q Divide by 5. -15/5= -3 -3=3q-10-5q Add like terms. -5q+3q=-2q -3=-2q-10 Add 10. -3+10=7 7=-2q Divide by 2. 7/-2= -3.5 (Answer didn't add up but I can't find my mistake. If anyone can find it and fix it please do so.)
3 and 7 are the only ones that I'm concerned about but the others are perfect. |
