1. The best place to find diamond ore is at elevation five (Y: 5).
2. It is impossible to collect diamonds from diamond ore with a pickaxe in a lower tier than iron pickaxes.
3. If mining at Y: 5, try strip-mining, a VERY useful strategy for getting tons of cobblestone, redstone, diamonds, etc.
4. Bring extra pickaxes! Once you run out of durability of one you can switch to another, otherwise it's a long trek back to the surface.
5. Bring building material to block lava pools. Be careful, not only is Y: 5 the most common place for diamond ore to generate, it is also home to the most common lava pool area, according to my past experiences.
